You will be able to watch live on the NASA Channel, if you get that with your cable, or satellite service.

TWC in Greensboro can go to hell for not having the Nasa channel. I am glad that the Science Channel had live coverage as well as HD. Too bad we missed the feed showing the external fuel tank separation but otherwise that was really cool seeing Atlantis' last mission (according to my mother).

^^^ Constellation. It is what will take us back to the moon! If I recall the overall project is called Orion. I always mix up the two.

^Orion is the crew capsule. Constellation is the overall project. Ares is the rocketry program.

Thank you. You would think after seeing two launches in person within the last 4 years that I would have committed that to memory. But then again I get a pass because I am just a lowly meteorologist while my sister is the one who is majoring in Astronomy.

So how is the new rocket system going to land? Will they just fall into the ocean again like they did back when NASA started?

^Yep, they are reusable. In fact, they are using slightly modified solid rocket boosters that you see on modern day space shuttles.

Not sure I know what you mean... Lockheed Martin is currently working on the Orion crew capsule. Maybe you mean the X-37?

If so, it is unmanned and doesn't go any further than low earth orbit.

Anyways, the shuttles themselves can't make it to the moon or beyond, they are designed for operations in earth orbit. That is why the current vehicles resemble the Apollo days... that is what worked before so we'll make it work again. The Ares 1-X unmanned prototype is scheduled for flight in August of this year. If you happen to be in Florida around that time, I'd encourage you to watch the launch... it will be history in the making.

so whats the coolest nasa project going on right now.
the ISS is not in the news, im guessing they're working on a moon colony which would be really cool
then theres always the mars mission which always seems to be several decades away

^All the cool projects are probably classified, that's why we never hear about them. But Project Constellation is the new hotness in the public eye, current plans are to be back on the moon by 2020 and on Mars by 2038. Mars mission always seems to be decades away because it was only announced in 2004 .

Can someone remind me what is to be gained by going to the moon again, now? We're so far away from colonizing or anything like that, why not wait until we get better technology to make the trips cheaper?
