I recently ripped down the deck on the back of the house because it was rotten and didn't mesh well with a subsurface house foundation. We want to install a concrete patio on the back of the house, and we need to install a small retaining wall about 14" tall on one side of the patio to make sure the area drains away from the house properly.Does anyone have any recommendations on contractors that do this type of work in the area? We want to get some pricing from a couple different contractors to make sure we're getting a competitive price. We want someone that is properly bonded and licensed to do the work, and we'd love to hear about any personal experiences anyone else has had with their own home projects. Also, let us know if you do this type of work and have your own company or similar. We already had one person come by to give an estimate, and his initial verbal estimate was about double what I anticipated. He also tried to claim that 3000psi concrete was currently selling for $200/cubic yard, yet I can buy high early for less than $100/Cu. Yd. all day long in more expensive areas such as DC and Norfolk. I'm also anticipating over 6 cubic yards of concrete, so I wouldn't expect to be paying a surcharge for a short load either. His total quote worked out to about $14 a square foot on an 18x25 patio, with an additional $800 or so to do the small retaining wall. When I estimated a two man crew working a full week at a 2.5 wage multiplier and with cost of forms and concrete at 20% markup, I still ended up at about half of the verbal estimate I got.

I think my parents used blalock paving for their driveway. http://www.blalock-paving.com/They did an alright job, but they screwed up the joints in one area. They had extra concrete so they extended part of the driveway for free, but they didn't move one of the joints back about six inches so it would match up with the new corner. End result is there was a big ass out-of-place crack in the driveway, but outside of that they did a fine job. I agree that it sounds like that guy's trying to pull some highway robbery on you. Tell him you know what's up and what it should cost and that you know he's priced it out too high. See what quote he comes back with then, lol. You're also right that there shouldn't be a surcharge for that size delivery (six cubic yards). Also, I'm not sure how much my parents' driveway ended up costing. It's pretty big and they had them throw in a sidewalk for good measure.

Larry Tanzini built two patios for me and one for drtaylor. For my most recent patio, I didn't even bother getting multiple quotes. 919-649-3916 is his #.I can post pictures of the work he did for me if you want. Right now, my RR connection is flaky as hell, so I don't feel like messing with it at the moment.

did you go with a brushed finish, or did you get a stamped design? Any suggestions on things to ask for after having gone through the process?

PM DaBirdhe is a GC that specializes in home renovations, decks, etc.I have also used Larry Tanzini as a subcontractor for some work on campus that I did a while back and he did a fantastic job.[Edited on May 16, 2009 at 2:20 PM. Reason : .]

There is a guy named Greg Paul who remodels houses in Raleigh. You could probably get information from him at least.

^^^^ah i missed that you wanted a concrete patio. Both of the ones I had done were paver patios. I didn't want concrete because it's so absorbent and stains so easily. Although in retrospect if i did it again, I would get concrete, and then put in tile over it.

ALSO, If you want another contact for a price comparison, PM me. I have several.

^^^tile over a concrete patio would be a good option. I wanted to avoid a paver patio because I have a wooded back yard and don't want the tree roots pushing everything out of place in the next few years. I feel like concrete would hold up a little better to being displaced by roots.
