what a fucking hack this guy is. I can't believe he continues to sell shows out. I don't mind the guy in his film roles, he's actually pretty funny. But his stand up is absolute garbage.

Did any of you watch his hour long crap job last night on Comedy Central? His final bit was about a youporn video. A fucking youporn video. and his punchline was the punchline of the video itself. Talk about a ripoff. Gah this guy sucks

I find him pretty funny most of the time, but I also don't have dumbass friends that recite his jokes repeatedly.

I didn't watch the special, but I downloaded the cd and listened to it while doing other stuff, I laughed a good bit but won't listen to it again.

he's gotten worse but his first few specials are still funny to me.. I'll probably check this out eventually

I guess I don't listen to enough standup to know if he's ripping off other people's material (because isn't that the biggest outrage against him?) and it seems to me like a lot of stand up comedians do alot of the same type of material anyways

There are definitely funnier stand up guys out there but I don't get all the hate for him

Not great (or even particularly good) comedy by any stretch, but by Dane Cook standards it was outstanding.

Easily the best stand-up he's ever done... mostly because it's actual stand-up, instead of relying upon wild flailing and/or getting the mass of chicks in his audience to scream and disguise the fact that he didn't actually make a joke.

It was "good" in the sense that it is better to have a dime than have no money at all.

^i agree with that. It wasn't ground breaking, but for him it was good. i will admit, i laughed at more than i thought i would but he blew it at the end.

my only complaint was he seemed to be making up a lot of the stories he acted like were true but I gess all comedians are doing that nowadays

I would say last night's special was MUCH better than Vicious Circle.

And it's not really uncommon to just comment on things you see everyday, I mean I imagine at least 99% of the people who watched the special didn't see that video. So he did a decent job of building up the story and I'll admit I laughed at the end.

It's not uncommon for comedians to just comment on shit they're kids or wives do, don't see how that is much different, at least he didn't steal that joke from another comedian like he has in the past.

^^ haha,...wow

Seriously, I like Dane's older stuff. I remember laughing my ass off at it.
I thought Isolated Incident sucked. Laughed twice.

I wish it could be like it used to be.

I mean, I too use to be a fan of Dane's, and I still think he does a good job in movies, but he's definitely fallen off. And as much as many people hate him, the guy did come on strong early on and won comic of the year. But I think that was where he messed up and got egotistical and started getting lazy with his material. Thus he has definitely seen a good portion of his original fanbase turn on him(obviously not the idiots who quote him and the chicks who think he's hot).

well once a comedian gets really famous he can pretty much say anything and the crowd will laugh so I can understand why you may start to lose your edge

I mean... he's not one of the greats, but so the fuck what!? that doesn't make him not funny

It is because Dane Cook is a storyteller/performer, not a comedian. If you separate the two he becomes more entertaining.

Still think the Price is Right bit is a classic.

^All the evidence I ever saw of Dane Cook "stealing" amounted to 2-3 bits IIRC and one of them was about naming your kid "Optimus Prime", something I could've thought up when I was 12.

I listened to a dane cook CD back in 2005 or something? Some of the bits were pretty funny, monkey/heist, that car alarm shtick, but then the public turned on him and it wasn't cool to like him anymore.

IMO, Dane Cook is popular because he is tall, fit, charismatic, loud and has an expressive, handsome face. Many comedians have similar acts to Dane Cook, but they haven't achieved the same level of fame because they aren't as pleasing to the American senses as he is. This alone doesnt really mean he deserves contempt. However, if you add the fact that he's stolen material from other, less-successful comedians, then he becomes contemptible (to me at least).

It only takes one or two good bits to make a successful comedian. Jim Gaffigan attributes his Hot-Pocket bit to an immense boost in his popularity, launching his acting career.

You're talking about Louis CK... and calling him a "less-successful comedian" is a matter of perspective.

He's on the fast track to being claimed as another Carlin or Hicks.

To be fair, I would actually put forward the idea that the whole stealing joke thing has boosted Louis CK's notability. It's a bit sick, but I think it's true.

This is true. Louis CK was not as well-known at the time, but this controversy has definitely earned him notice since then.
