I think it has more do do with the NOx and SOx that comes from burning charcoal. At least that's what I learned this semester in my Air Quality class. Oh, and that burning wood smell people LOVE in the winter... yeah, its poisonous.I used to only eat my beef well done, gray center on my steak... until I discovered how good it is medium! Never again will I eat a well done piece of beef (besides burger). But most of our burger is deer burger, we don't buy ground beef much.
5/22/2009 2:49:48 PM
mmm venison... love it.I cook all my beef Pittsburgh style (seared outside with rare center) but my burgers must be well done.
5/22/2009 2:52:19 PM
i've heard this for probably 10-15 years. it's nothing new.[Edited on May 22, 2009 at 2:56 PM. Reason : ^ yeah, def well-done only with ground beef]
5/22/2009 2:56:14 PM
Well done burgers? Gross. Shit tastes horrible. If its not pink I'm not eating it.
5/22/2009 2:57:47 PM
^^ well maybe restaurants are liable then, we should put a surgeon general's warning on all grills/meat products.
5/22/2009 2:58:38 PM

5/22/2009 3:02:19 PM
I heard this on NPR about 6 months ago and it also said sauteing stuff causes cancer too.they suggested baking and broiling.]
5/22/2009 3:02:37 PM
I really couldn't give a shit. I'd rather die fat and happy than hungry and panicky.
5/22/2009 3:03:38 PM
I think Ken and I grill and saute meat more than the other ways of cooking meat.

my grandparents lived on a farm in Elkin, NC smoking/dipping daily, and curing their own pork, eating gravy with every meal, etc. and they lived to be 95 and 97 respectively. They always said that stress is what kills you. I agree. (though obviously poor diet and smoking doesn't help)
5/22/2009 3:06:29 PM
^3 That's basically what my grandpa told the doctor and he died at about 55 years old... Told the doc he was going to keep eating his fried chicken, drinking his 2 pots of coffee a day, and smoking his pack of Marlboro Red's[Edited on May 22, 2009 at 3:06 PM. Reason : .]

eating raw meat makes you a manly man!1 *grunt chestbeat*...Personally, I prefer my food to be cooked. I like a bit of pink in a good steak but I really don't see the appeal of rare burgers. Ground beef has a pretty disgusting consistency when undercooked.I guess this means I'm gonna get cancer.
5/22/2009 6:55:32 PM
This is old as Jesus.Cooking meat creates carcinogenic compounds called as heterocyclic amines (HCAs). The more a chunk of meat is cooked, and the higher the temperature, the more HCAs are produced. And those burnt parts are poison.Best thing they say is to have meat in stews (because the temperature doesn't go over 100 C), but everybody likes steaks. Eating grilled/bbqed meat once in a while is not a problem. But yeah, if you eat grilled/bbqed meat all the time, you are definitely moving your grave closer to yourself.
