So just now I was doing some browsing at info on our football team this upcoming season. Specifically, I was looking at the depth chart and trying to make my predictions at each position based on the spring. I was pretty happy to see we have 15 returning starters.

That got me thinking about other teams. Anyway, I came across this: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/andy_staples/04/28/spring-top25/index.html
Which itself it old news and more than a month old.

Florida, obviously, won the national championship last year. On top of that they have the most returning starters of any team in the preseason top 25 (17 total including all 11 on defense). So do you all think this Florida team has the potential to be the best college football team ever? Or at least the best that any of us have witnessed in our lifetimes.

There is already too much Tim Tebow in the news imo. The amount of coverage on that guy will be even more rediculous if Florida is an unbeatable super team next year.

We go through this every two or three years it seems. A few years ago it was USC they were saying this about. It's impossible to judge, really.

But I'll say this: they would have to go undefeated to enter the discussion, and Meyer hasn't done that in either national championship season at UF.

Do they have someone that can immediately replace Percy Harvin without missing a beat?

I think random losses can always be attributed to young teams having momentary lapses. If they stay healthy this year I can see them not being lulled into situations where they'll lose games they shouldn't.

^^ possibly. andre debose and carl moore are both pretty nasty. Deonte Thompson is listed as running a 4.28 40.

The Miami teams from earlier this decade were so loaded it was insane and the Nebraska teams from the mid '90s were beasts as well.

The 1999 FSU team was pretty good. A lot of NFL talent on that team, and they actually went undefeated, something UF has never done.

^^That was sweet when the wooped VT. A friend of mine was a huge VT fan and brought Vick into conversation any chance she could.

I doubt any team will be able to put up the stats and win margins that the 2001 Miami team did, they were incredible. They also were stocked with talent and depth at every position, so many NFL starters on that team.

I really don't think this or last year's UF team is in the same boat.

ESPN already told us USC was the best team ever, but they lost to Vince Young and Texas, so obviously Texas is the best team ever right now.

damn, I've just looked at the 2001 Miami football roster. Almost half the team made it to the NFL.

^I despise Miami, but yes, the 2001 Miami team is the best college football team ever. As much as it pains me to say it, I don't even think it's that close

You may recognize one or two of those names...

Good lord, I had no idea. Najeh Davenport, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis were all RBs on this team at the same time . It should be illegal to have that much talent, let alone at one position.

if Butch Davis can recruit like that at UNC, we're screwed.

While the other three are still NFL starters (borderline with McGahee)

Davenport will go down as the most memorable in Miami lore

and not for stats he dropped on the field

but for scat he dropped off it

I dunno, that 2008 NCSU team had Andre Brown, Toney Baker, Jamelle Eugene, AND Curtis Underwood.. all while redshirting Brandon Barnes.
