"You might think your job sucks, but at least your boss wasn't insane enough to remove all the chairs and install security so an alarm goes off if you don't walk fast enough.

The president of Canon Electronics, Hisashi Sakamaki, is also the author of a book proposing some of the same measures he takes with his own company. His theory is that forcing employees to stand not only saves money but increases productivity and enhances employee relationships."

Good work getting your designers to work those late nights getting your complex 3D design models done in time for the big meeting.

They're going to be unable to work efficiently more than 6-7 hours a day because of your new policy!

What an ass. This is not a good idea.

Also if standing enhances employee relationships it's because their cubicles are too tall. Can't see the forest for the trees, this fellow.

I fail to see how this is any different from working in a grocery store as a cashier. The only difference I see is that they have nice soft carpet to stand on, while cashiers stand on a hard concrete floor.

the last time I worked at a grocery store it was for 3 days before I quit

I doubt I'd last at this guy's corporate sweat shop much longer

i also figure in japan, you're more likely to have 12-14 hour shifts much more so than here in the states, esp for a technical job at a big corporation. i doubt they get breaks either

^^ Shifts are only 8 hours, but you're expected to come in early and finish late. Generally salaries are small enough that the company encourages this behavior by paying overtime.

I worked as a gas station cashier and stood 8 hours at a time. You guys are all serious pussies if you think that standing is hard.

i work standing up whenever i can at offices. at home depot corporate, the desks could actually elevated high enough to stand and type. i am much more productive standing up, and have a lot more energy

of course, i was also in the military for almost a decade and rarely had somewhere to sit

there is a difference between a cashier making 8.75/hr and a professional making 87,500/yr.

I went to school for 6 years so I wouldn't have to work a job that required me to stand on my feet all day. Quit your bragging.

Lol. You got me. But I'd rather have a job that has a bit of freedom than one that requires to stand all day. Probably just because I've got bad varicose veins due to being a bit overweight.

I function much better on the phone whenever I'm standing up, walking around, putting, shooting at the nerf hoop, etc..

But if I'm doing a repetitive task like that, I'd prefer to sit

This whole thing reminds me of

Quote :
"GEORGE: (To guard) Tired?

GUARD: No.

GEORGE: How come uh, no chair?

GUARD: What?

GEORGE: I, I couldn't help but notice that uh you don't have a chair.

GUARD: I don't need a chair.

GEORGE: No I didn't mean to imply that you did. You're obviously a very well

proportioned individual. I was just wondering, have they ever offered you a chair?

GUARD: Nope.

GEORGE: Would you like a chair?

GUARD: I suppose if they gave me one I'd sit down.

GEORGE: Ah ha, Ah ha. You would, wouldn't you?

GUARD: Obviously I'd rather sit than stand, if that's what your asking.

GEORGE: That's exactly my point.

GUARD: Well who wouldn't?

GEORGE: Cause I tell you, frankly, I would like to walk in hear one day and find

you sitting down. (Starts to walk out of the store) That would give me a lot of

pleasure. Call me crazy."

would the company mind if you had an indoor basketball stand set up and got your work done.

i know the culture dislikes things like that.

If you get to move around a bit, it's not that bad, but standing up all day in the same spot is pretty terrible.
