cool, I'll watch just because there's not much else on TV right now but I'm pretty sure this show jumped the shark sometime in Season 2

i canceled showtime a few months ago to save some money and thought at the time that i'd add it back when weeds/dexter/whatever came first came back, but i'm not gonna do it for weeds. it was pretty crappy last season.

Season 4 is about to come in the mail through Netflix, but it sounds like everyone is disappointed with the show after somewhere in the second season.

yep. pretty much.

S5 is make-or-break for the show. They can use this season to change course and get back on track, or it can continue to go down the shitter.

Unfortunately, I think S4 was supposed to be a kind of "reset", with them moving to San Diego and introducing new characters, but it just didn't work out very well

That's too bad, I'll reserve hope for S5 and not be too disappointed with the S4 discs I have coming.

^^agreed with the reset comment.

They got out of the town that they were in but the story line still didn't have the relatable feel it originally had. She was no longer a mother taking care of her kids whose life bordered between respected neighborhood socialite and drug dealer. instead she began an all out drug dealer who had lost the relatable or redeeming qualities about her.

the show started as a good lampoon of suburban life and an example of stepping away from the ordinary, as was immediately portrayed by the song "little boxes" but this theme has slowly devolved from this nontraditional content to something less captivating.

if the show took a surprisingly dark turn that would be one thing but the show fell down a path of random and absurd which neither deserves respect for writing or appreciation of content.

That being said, I'll watch this season because i have watched them all so far. 1 and 2 because i liked it 3 and 4 because i kept up hope it would get back to where it was. This season I watch so I can see it die.

I disagree with the notion that season 4 was as bad as people are saying it was. It wasn't as funny, and very few new characters were developed, it's true. But there was a lot more drama at the end of the season that I think leads in to season 5. A ton of shit kicked up in that final episode. It was Nancy's unraveling. It seemed like she had an epiphany when she was talking to Andy in the tub. Shane is now in the business, and en route to becoming "Strange" Botwin all grown-up. Doug decided to fight back. Not to mention Doug put the idea in Andy's head that he's in love with Nancy, and I really want to see what's going to happen with that. Celia's being held captive by her daughter who hasn't been around since like the second episode.

I don't think the season was a reset at all. I think all the characters (except for maybe Silas) matured in one way or another in Season 5. In my idealistic world, all these character developments that happened sort of ho-hum throughout Season 4 will develop into some great new ideas for Season 5, and the dramedy scale will tip from drama back towards comedy.

And I really don't understand all the hatred for Season 3, it was just as good as the first two in my opinion.

Can't wait for tonight!

This is part of what made the last season so bad in my point of view. The show had no real direction and then in order to wrap it up a whole bunch of random events had to be haphazardly thrown together in the end. I prefer when the show had direction, personally.

the most recent episode was decent. I was actually surprised by it, in terms of quality. Nancy is still feeling the remorse for what she has done to her life and where she is now. shes back to the drug dealing is scary and not cool perspective. the story lines with the rest of the characters are going to need the same caliber of development to keep any interest there.

regardless, i hope this is the last season.

finished my first 4 seasons marathon yesterday afternoon

not a whole lot was accomplished it seemed in episode 1 - just building the plot for this season since there wasn't a whole lot to keep going from last season other than the kid and celia

the celia stuff was by far my favorite - i love doug wilson - does anyone not that watches the show on a regular basis

so shane's not really leaving (damn he grew up much more than anyone else as do all kids his age) per imdb having him in the credits for the foreseeable future - i'd guess he goes out with the rest of the crew and gets deeper into the drug scene with silas

the paternity test basically has to come out as expected - it's really the only way that story can keep going unless they really do all run but i can't believe they are going to let nancy have the kid by either killing the series or the kid somehow

i assume rad and his mom are completely gone but not a huge loss other than she was kind of hot

^ i also loved the flash mob scene

yeah, pretty much what I took out of it - just a (slow) continuation from S4. And seeing as how S4 sucked, that's not a good start. But, maybe some things will really turn around in the next couple eps

and yeah, the Celia stuff was easily the best and funniest. All the random calls to all of the main characters were hilarious.
However, I felt like they were trying to build the Mexican boyfriend up as a sympathetic character, for the most part, and he was being dragged into all this mess by the girl (Celia's older daughter, forgot her name). She beat him up, she was behind the kidnapping, she was making him make the phone calls, etc. I never really "believed" that he would actually hurt Celia, and was just trying to get money out of it.

But then when the daughter was talking about harvesting her organs, and Celia mentioned she had cancer, the boyfriend was like "oh, SHIT, now we'll never get money out of her", and the way he said it made it sound like he was really on board with the whole plan. Which, if so, would make him as much of a son-of-a-bitch as the daughter.

^^^Hmm, I took his realization of her cancer to be the exact opposite. It sounded almost as if he was relieved to have an out in which to convince Quinn to just give up and let her go. All the "im on board" subtleties were probably just to pacify her so that he wouldn't upset the balance of the relationship and get his whipped ass stuck in the face again. o.0

At least toward the end anyway, I'm sure at some point he cared about that loot, but after Celia manipulated him a bit and all the ransom ends were falling apart, not so much. I'd have to go back and watch the scene again though.

yeah it is interesting how that can come to be in shows.

for example in lost i used to love kate and hate certain other characters but now i can't stand kate, and really dislike jack for the most part as well.

andy is up there for me. doug is getting a little old for me, and he used to be my favorite.

I agree. I liked Doug much better in the earlier seasons when he was somewhat productive, incredibly well liked, but almost completely worthless. Now he sort of just pisses everyone off and doesn't really contribute anything. I think Andy has really come around though.

yeah, it was the funniest in a while, at least as far as funny lines and stories.

but.... if it wasn't just 30min/week for only a few more weeks, I would just give up on this show (like my wife did at the beginning of last season - she won't watch it with me anymore). I mean, jesus, wtf is going on. It's just getting ridiculous, and going from plot-to-plot makes no sense. The 6-month time jump mid-season is a sure sign that the writers are running into walls with their stories.

I think I'll go back and watch S1 again so I can feel good about the show again

the OB-GYN looked familiar a couple weeks ago, but it took me until this last episode, when she had more screen time, to realize it was Alanis Morissette.
