I certainly hope that they suck this year, but I find it hard to actually believe that they will...they do have some question marks (notably their receiving corps) but their defense should be really good. Of course, I think it's only a matter of time until a big time job opens up (no offense UT or Arkansas) and he bolts for a real football school, a la Mack Brown.

They lost Nicks, who was the majority of their offense. They lost Tate, who was the majority of their special teams. The lost Paschal, who was the heart of their defense and Goddard, who saved their asses with tons of INTs.

They won't be horrible, but they won't finish in the Top-25. I don't think they'll finish anywhere near it actually, even with that easy ass schedule.

is that sarcasm?

A top Big East team vs. a middle of the road Big East team.

An SEC school who usually starts off strong vs. a 9-5 conference usa school.

you obviously don't watch much football. Pitt hadn't been to a bowl since 2004 until last season so calling them a "top big east team" is a fucking joke (they were good last year but hadn't been good before that in like 5 years). They also lost pretty much their only serious offensive threat in LeSean McCoy and STILL don't have a decent QB. Their defense is solid but they couldn't even manage to score a single point on Oregon State in their bowl game and that was with McCoy. UCONN has been solid the past two years, they won the Big East in 07 and went 8-5 last year. South Carolina/ECU is less clear cut, and yes ECU plays in a much easier conference, but it's pretty obvious that ECU is much better offensively than South Carolina, Garcia might turn out to be good but I wasn't impressed at all by him last season.

UNC's success will rely on Yates and his progression. He's going to have to be better than last year, and by better, I mean better than the way he was playing against VA Tech when he broke his foot, not just better than when he played against us. UNC fans are quick to point out how well Yates was playing when he was hurt, however, they beat McNeese State and Rutgers, when Rutgers started off 1-5. Brandon Tate also destroyed both of those teams, single handedly, and winning by a small margin over McNeese is not something to brag about. UCONN's QB was hurt the week UNC beat them, and UNC blocked at least two kicks if I remember for scores, if you can duplicate that, then more power to them, although UCONN lost their star RB who had I thnk 1800 yards in 08. They were playing Va Tech strong, but this was against Va Tech's weakest team in years, and having an identity crisis at QB (i.e. Va Tech will be stronger this year, by a lot). Signature win @ Miami, and solid win over ND for national exposure. Choke jobs @ UVA and @ Maryland.

Thier OOC may be weak this year, but it's much stronger than last year, they had mcneese, @ Rutgers, UCONN, ND. Now they have Citadel, @UCONN, ECU, DIV 1AA. Much tougher this year, they won't get 4-0 OOC this season. ECU will be pumped, and at UCONN won't be easy, although they could win that one, but won't beat both ECU and UCONN in any case, 3-1 best case OOC, which isn't 4-0 like last year. They trade up ACC wise too, replacing Maryland with FSU, no one will argue that vs. FSU is tougher than @Maryland in 2009. @G tech, @Va tech (Thurs Night, Lane Stadium), good luck with facing your 2 toughest Division foes on the road. Oh yea, they come to Raleigh as well on the last game of the season.

Their front 7 is loaded, probably the best front 7 in the ACC, and even with an average secondary, they should be statistically the top or 2nd best defense in the ACC on paper. But when their offense doesn't click, and the defense is asked to play 37-40 minutes per game, this will wear and tear (i.e. NCSU 2004). Thier offense is unproven at EVERY position. QB: Yates, still no decisive way to evaluate him, same with Draughn. Thier OL wasn't good to begin with, and they lost 3 guys I think, and their WR's are Frosh with the exception of Little, who spent last year running the ball. If I were a UNC fan, 7-5 would be solid, 8-4 great, and 9-3 or better should get Davis COY. Realistically, they HAVE to win either @VaTech or @ G Tech, preferably VaTech, they cannot lose both of those games and expect to make any noise in the Coastal, good luck with that. It's good to know most UNC fans want improvement from 8-4, so they are leaving no room for error for Davis and company, and unrealistic expectations are running rampant.

ARGH???

and for the record, here's UNC's defensive rankings from last year:

DEFENSE
National Conf.
Rushing: 56 7
Passing: 84 11
Total Def: 64 11
Sacks: 80 11

i fail to see where this hype is coming from about their defense. i seem to remember us raping and pillaging them.

Unless UNC goes 4-0 OOC in 09, then this season OOC will be tougher than last year, yo ucan't do better than 4-0, and with ECU and @UCONN on the slate, I don't see them getting out unscathed, hence their OOC will be more difficult (with regards to wins and losses)in 09.

No I meant their 09 defense will be good, not 08. Freshman and Sophomores become Sophomores and Juniors, and they had 4-5 first year starters in 08, they all come back and are returning starters in 09 . They lost Paschal, who was more of a mental presence than physical, and Goddard. They lost 2 players total, one of whom they won't even know they missed physically. Their entire two deep is back from their young D line in 08, their D will be stout, if not, they could be looking at 3-8. They certainly have many more question marks than the media or their fans are acknowledging on offesne, but their D will not be responsible for them losing the games they lose, but hey, if Dwyer, T Taylor gashes them for a buck fifty on the ground, I won't complain.

UNC lived and died by turnovers last season, I can't remember how many times I saw a linebacker pick off a pass and return it at least 30 yards down the field and either score or put the offense in scoring position in those out of conference games (especially rutgers and Uconn).

UNC also almost always cracked in pressure situations (having to stop the last drive to win). They lost to UVA, they probably should've lost to ND, wasen't a dropped pass called a completion or something and UNC piled on the guy so he couldn't get up and ran the clock out? they were a pass about 6 inches too high from losing to Miami. They won more games last season, but they were far from one of the better 8-4 teams.

GT and BC were the only wins that I was actually impressed with from UNC. GT of course had a hurt quarterback and the backup looked like he'd never even seen an option offense... I don't even think they got the ball within 25 yards of the endzone... so I guess BC was really the only win I was impressed with.

it doesn't matter how good the defense is if the offense can't score. John Madden's 1st rule of football: if you want to win you have to score more points than the other team.

because half of them went to UNC, so they heighten any hype they can even try to create. But ranking them and talking them up only gives mediocre teams reason to play harder against them.

god you're fucking dumb...9-4 is WAY better than 8-5 You obviously don't watch much college football. Pitt still doesn't have a decent QB, and their only serious offensive weapon left for the NFL (LeSean McCoy). UConn won the big east in 2007, so keep talking about how terrible they are but you're only exposing your own ignorance. You also probably didn't watch Pitt in their bowl game where they failed to score a single fucking point.

wow that's some insightful analysis right there You obviously didn't read the post I was responding to. Someone said we raped and pillaged their defense, and all I said was that you can't put all the blame for that on their defense since their offense couldn't score/hold on to the ball. That's a perfectly reasonable statement, unlike half the garbage you are posting. I wasn't saying UNC was awesome or whatever you were implying in your post.

Stop me if you've already heard this tidbit of UNC's history of football fail: UNC taking credit for the forward pass
http://tarheelmania.wordpress.com/2007/09/

Quote :
"That’s right, John Heisman himself was there when UNC was playing Georgia in 1895. The Tar Heels were forced to punt, but the line didn’t do a very good job of blocking, and their punter was quickly surrounded by Bulldogs defenders. In a moment of panic, he ran to his right, saw a wide open UNC player downfield and threw the ball up. George Stephens caught it and ran for the 70 yard touchdown."

Quote :
"John Heisman, a noted historian, wrote 30 years later that, indeed, the Tar Heels had given birth to the forward pass against the Bulldogs (UGA)"

I wonder what UNC historians will whitewash 30 years from now...

"John Heisman, namesake of the Heisman Trophy, wrote 30 years later that, indeed, the Tar Heels had given birth to the forward pass against the Bulldogs (UGA). It was conceived to break a scoreless deadlock and give UNC a 6–0 win. The Carolinians were in a punting situation and a Georgia rush seemed destined to block the ball. The punter, with an impromptu dash to his right, tossed the ball and it was caught by George Stephens, who ran 70 yards for a touchdown. Nowadays, they have nightmares about Russell Wilson's forward passes."

also i didnt realize this

Quote :
"From 1994 to 1995, teams from Technician and The Daily Tar Heel played a football game called The Grudge Bowl on the Friday before the North Carolina-NC State football game. The game was played under standard college football rules but with none of the protective equipment. Technician staff members won both meetings in blowouts, claiming a booby-prize called "The Golden Plunger" and, in 1994, declared themselves the National Football Champion of College Student Media."

Their fans suck cock, unless it's basketball, they don't understand. Last season I had a friend call me from from one of their games, we had like a 10 min. conversation & we both understood each other. Which means the noise in the stadium was nonexistent considering it was teh 2nd quarter. I heard the crowd cheer one time.

Jeez...get a fucking clue why don't you.
