I hope they update the controls, maybe give it dual-analog.

or online multiplayer at the least. If HD is the only new thing then I'll just dig out my N64 copy. or play Halo.

One strike against Perfect Dark that definitely put it at a disadvantage when doing comparisons with Goldeneye was the frame rate issue. I'm sure Goldeneye would have had the same problem if it had allowed bots in MP.

Each had their pluses. That's why I owned both.

This debate always humored me. I felt like if you had friends to play video games with, Goldeneye was better. If you were on your own, Perfect Dark was better because you could play against bots.

I can guarantee perfect dark on the 360 won't suffer from the terrible framerate even 4 player did on the n64.

Hopefully Goldeneye will come out on the Wii Virtual Console...or completely re-released with new controls like they did for Punch-Out. Add in online multiplayer and Goldeneye will reign supreme again.

^Synopsis for your reasons.

I figured if I ever bought a 360 (currently sitting this generation out) I'd scoop up a lot of used games on the cheap, PDZ being one of them. How/why did it suck?

PDZ wasn't a bad game by any means. However, the original PD was far away and the better of the two games. Why? PD had intriguing characters, an acceptable storyline, a dark and gritty atmosphere, and the gunplay was among the most diverse and intriguing in any FPS. PDZ gave us one of the most ridiculous storylines ever seen in gaming, an unnecessary cartoony atmosphere, and much of the awesome guns were removed in favor of balancing the game. Which, isn't exactly a bad thing, but this is Perfect Dark here. The online multiplayer in PDZ is far and away my favorite on XBL, but I can't help but feel the original would have made a greater impact and is far and away the better game.

Me and a few of my buddies have been playing Goldeneye again recently, and despite the naysayers, it has definitely aged well. It's still the king as far as I'm concerned.

The default look/move controls for goldeneye were terrible though. I always change the controls to a more modern layout when I play.

It was basically Goldeneye 2. Multiplayer on Facility/Felicity was so much better with Laptop Guns and the RCP-120.

There were so many more options, weapons, and levels. Goldeneye has the nostalgia factor, but once PD came out my friends and I hardly ever went back.

^I can't really comment on the lameness of the levels or lack thereof, but how were the reload times "atrocious?" Atrocious as compared to what? Or did you like Goldeneye's "in a split instant" reloading better? I thought they weren't all that slow, and it forced you to think tactically about when and where you should reload your guns. Besides, some of the animations were cool (imo the cyclone has this super-cool sound effect that goes with it).

I loved those controls and would have no problem using them on a modern console. they required more skill than today's dual stick controls

agree, with more variety...

i really don't like the double stick even to this day... give me look up and down and strafe on 4 buttons and a movement stick any day...

It wasn't sticks vs buttons that was so terrible.

Optimal controls is one thumb looks and one thumb moves.

http://goldeneye.wikia.com/wiki/Control_style

Default control style "1.1 Honey" is awful. "1.2 Solitaire" is good, and the basis for modern FPS games.

not that im the biggest fan of dual sticks, but come one. it is basically the same thing except that the sticks give you more precise control. it is like dpad vs stick for movement, sure you could do it on either but stick is nicer.

not used to dual stick aiming personally

I played halo 3 on 360 and ran around like a chicken with my head cut off

Its just one of those things you have to get used to I guess

in terms of precision I can see it being = to mouse and wasd, though not by much

No.

Its not the same thing. C-up and C-down is for looking up and down. C-left and C-right is for strafing. You can do these independently or at the same time on the 64 controller. With a dual stick, holding diagonal-up is not the same thing and wouldn't be a strafe and looking up. Buttons allow you to do more than the limited choice of uni-direction with the stick.

So then you will say, well, that is why strafe has been moved to the left stick and now the right stick is only for aiming (no movement). The problem I have with this setup is that I can no longer strafe with the right c-button AND move forward with the left stick. The dual stick setup restricts the player to only either moving forward OR strafing left and right.

For N64 novices and people who only grew up on the dual stick, they may not see this as a big difference or even that important. But for folks such as myself who spent years on perfect dark, this control method is as good as it gets.

nah man, you push forward left or forward right.

Just 1 thumb required.

Besides, I'm even more old school than Goldeneye, I'm used to mouse & keyboard

what? no it fucking doesn't - you can move the stick diagonally at any angle to move in that direction. (pro tip: moving diagonally is the same as strafing and moving forward/back at the same time)
what you're describing is having movement mapped to an nes d-pad.

I love that trick. It also helped out with getting some of the cheats, since otherwise you wouldn't be fast enough.

Perfect Dark was the greatest game for the N64 period. My cousin stayed at our house one summer and brought it. By the end of the summer we were playing 2 (him and me) vs 8 (sims set to 'dark' difficulty) matches with everyone invisible and we were able to shut out the the other team.

Note: the Dark Sims have 100% headshot accuracy, and also move faster than human players. The only real way to kill them was to shoot them as they rounded corners.

My brother and I used to love playing with all 8 dark-fist sims. You had to be quick at killing them or they would round that corner and punch you to death.

as pablo already said, you can still strafe and move forward with dual stick. i have no clue what you are talking about. all they did was move movement to one stick and make it more flexible.

its fine to like that control method better, but it is just silly to say that it is far superior for made up reasons.

At the diagonal, you are neither fully moving forward or fully strafing, somewhere in the middle. With stafe and movement separate it allows both at once, a somewhat faster movement, if you will. As aaronian and umbrellaman have already stated they are familiar with I am talking about, this is not "made up" at all.

Back to the game. What was everybody's favorite multiplayer stage to play on? Mine were Area 52, Facility, and Complex.
