Pretty awesome. Saturn actually has built up a pretty damn good brand over the last 5-6 years. Finally have 3 solid platforms, and they make interesting cars that are still pretty reliable, affordable and economical. 6/8/2009 6:11:52 PM |

^^is it more logical to hate on saturn or pontiac?
i guess i have a bias toward saturn, and feel pontiac is older so it shoulda been saved first

Speaking of shutting shit down, didn't the new Malibu have a V6 option when it first came out?
I was talking about this with my friend last night. There's only a 4 cylinder engine available on the website now.
[Edited on June 9, 2009 at 1:19 AM. Reason : ^ Yeah, actually I'm interested in buying a Ford because they didn't take gubmint $$$.] 6/9/2009 1:19:24 AM |

Ford isn't "alive" b/c they make superior cars over GM and Chrysler (though in some cases they do). They're "alive" b/c they had the foresight to see what was coming economically and mortgaged the shit out of their assets before the credit market locked up.
I do admire them for that. Though I have to say NOT buying a GM/Chrysler b/c they got help from the gov't seems retarded to me. It's like saying you really really don't want to give them a chance to pay back the gov't (i.e. you and me).
The Malibu is still available with a V6. 6/9/2009 9:53:48 AM |

^^Yep. V6 is (and has been since it was introduced) only available on the 2LT and LTZ models. The LS and 1LT can only be had with the 4 cylinder, maybe that's the source of confusion? It's also listed on the web site as the "HFV6 package" where it's bundled with hydraulic power steering and the 6-speed auto, not under the "powertrain" category which is kind of confusing.

See, here's the thing--if Penske tries to run them as an independent company, the open question is whether or not GM will let them keep those platforms. The Aura shares the Epsilon platform with the Malibu, which is Chevy's hot model right now; the VUE shares the Theta platform with the Chevy Equinox; and the Outlook shares the Lambda platform with the Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia (strong seller) and Buick Enclave (the flagship model for Buick's new direction). I know they will continue selling the current models, but will they be allowed to develop new models on platforms that are still held by GM? If you walk into a Saturn showroom in 5 years, will they be essentially licensed GM derivatives produced in Penske-owned facilities, or will they be a non-cohesive collection of models based on whoever Penske can reach a badge-engineering deal with? Interesting to see. I'm sure it's spelled out in the contract somewhere, but I've not seen any explanation of it yet.

The Aura, Vue, and Outlook will live on for a little while with Penske buying those on a contract basis from GM. The Vue hybrid, Astra, and Sky have been cancelled in all of this. After that Penske is allegedly going to import cars from Samsung Motors (a Renault subsidiary in Korea.) Ultimately he wants to make it a full-line electric car manufacturer. Or this is what I've gleaned from the Detroit News and the New York Times. 6/10/2009 9:35:00 AM |

2007 was the last model year of the plastic body panel. 2008+ are made in Mexico as well. I have a 99 SL1 and an 06 Vue with the Honda 3.5 V6, and both are great cars.6/10/2009 9:58:03 AM |

I just put a door on a vue the other day that was plastic. thats weird, maybe it was from japan or some shit. idk i work at a body shop. and most the cars arent but a year old. glad they are moving away from plastic.

This can only end well.
Most of the modern "plastic" cars are actually SMC. Very easy stuff to work with with the proper tool and training.
