tee nuts are made to pull up into wood and not need a wrench on the backside to hold the nut from spinning

We also used to call T-nuts blind nuts. Not what OP is talkin' about, I'm sure.

from the looks of it i'm guessing this type of nut is rare and probably specifically made for certain items. but yeah t-nut/blind nut is not it.

I wonder if this is one of those things you'll randomly find in the "hard to find" furniture/nuts/bolts section at Lowe's.

Worth a shot anyway.

A three winged anchor nut, like the one in the top left?

I had to find something similar to that one time for my roof rack.

May look similar to this http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/224816373/ANCHOR_NUT/showimage.html

Oh my fucking sweet Jesus. That would definitely fall into the fastening knob category. A goddamn THREADED KNOB.

I used to order them by the hundreds when I worked for Flanders/CSC. But ours had either FOUR or SIX tits on them. I even had whole batches custom drilled and threaded with ACME threads.

Next time, know what you're asking for.
