Haha, it's a pretentious city with a huge underclass and so many civic/economic issues that there's regular riots there? Sweet. Does that mean that it smells there as well?

Carrboro's about 10x as better than Chapel Hill since Chapel Hill has planning laws to retain its exclusiveness.

Is it in the mountains or on the coast?

I stole this from wikipedia, Carrboro is kind of the western edge of the triangle, marked with P on this map from the Research Triangle entry on wiki.

Quote :
"Primary cities and towns

A - Raleigh
B - Durham
C - Chapel Hill
D - Cary
E - Morrisville
F - Apex
G - Holly Springs
H - Fuquay-Varina
I - Garner
J - Knightdale
K - Wendell
L - Zebulon
M - Rolesville
N - Wake Forest
O - Hillsborough
P - Carrboro
Q - Pittsboro
R - Clayton
S - Youngsville
T - Franklinton
U - Creedmoor
V - Stem
W - Butner"

It is also one of only 2 triangle cities (Carrboro & Franklinton) to have gay mayors... I guess maybe being gay friendly makes it Paris-like?

How the hell does Franklinton have a gay mayor? That place is redneck central.

I don't know, but he seems to fit in with everyone (guy on the right) in this pic.

But it's less surprising that Carrboro has had a gay mayor, or that Chapel Hill will have one as of Nov (mark's actually a pretty cool guy).

Mark Kleinschmidt for Mayor

I mean, there have been gay city councilmen/alderman, county commissioners, judges, police chiefs, in the triangle area (and an openly gay state senator, but I don't remember what district she's from), but all in all the triangle as a whole is one of the more gay friendly parts of the state... so maybe Franklinton in this regard is functioning more as a member of the triangle rather than as redneck central?

But back to the topic on hand, here's wiki's info on that nickname for Carrboro:
Quote :
"Nickname

Carrboro's nickname, "The Paris of the Piedmont," stems from a sarcastic comment by John Martin, a reporter for the now-defunct Chapel Hill Weekly. In 1970, Nyle Frank, now a musician but then a graduate student in political science at the nearby University of North Carolina, organized an alternative "Invisible University," and announced plans to have himself crowned as the institution's new "King" in Carrboro. Martin commented, "I can see it now -- The Paris of the Piedmont.""

That lady that's sitting down is seriously not enjoying herself compared to everybody else in that picture.
