I have a 99 Eclipse with the 4-sp slushbox. I noticed the transmission slip out of gear the other day when I was nearing my destination. When I turned on my car the next time, the CEL came on and I noticed my transmission was stuck in limp mode.

The car is sitting in Cottman's right now. They told me that they reset everything and went for a test drive. The car was trying to shift into 3rd but wasn't making it. So I was told my 3rd gear may be sheared off or something may be broken in the assembly. They said the job will cost $1600 - $1900 with $500 of it coming just for going in to take a look.

What do you guys think I should do? The car isn't even worth that much but it only has 80k miles on it. So there should be a lot more life left in it. (I've also just put a new set of $500 tires on there and just ordered a pair of new speakers for it, so I don't want to lose whatever value I have in what could be much more life in this car.) Could Cottman's be taking me on a ride for my money?

I'm thinking of calling Aamco and asking them if they can tow my car in and do the job for cheaper...

Sure they could. Or they could be 100% right. If you don't trust them get a second opinion, but realize that it's going to cost you.

You're going to have a tough time finding a good running 1999 anything with good tires for <$1900, so I'd say you might as well get this one fixed and keep driving it.

^True. I thought about that idea. But I'm also debating the 1-yr warranty on a shop-built box versus finding a used one that could possibly go out again. I know these Chrysler transmissions are horrible!! I'm definitely gonna get it fixed. I just have to see if I can get it done for less.

On the other hand, I'm going to try and get a new car soon and hopefully take advantage of the current economic situation. I'm thinking Genesis but I'm wishing 370!

gayrager sages, what could be "sheared"? seems bogus. broken shafts will leave you revving the engine and going nowhere.

you have to understand that some people just want attention. they don't want to add anything useful to the thread.

come on now, it is worth more than that. i just sold a 99 cougar with almost no breaks, close to bald tires, with a window that didnt work and a broken front lamp for 2200 (to a friends family member). could easily get 2500 ...if the transmission worked. you'll be 600 in the black!
