Tor Ramsey clamped two hand-cranked film winders to a desk. Placing an old Magnasync Moviola 16-millimeter table-top viewer between the winders, he brought N.C. State's basketball past to life.
On one aging reel of coaches' film, David Thompson and Monte Towe hustle down court for the 1971-72 freshman team. Another reel shows players using stall tactics in N.C. State's memorable 12-10 defeat of Duke in the 1968 ACC Tournament semifinals.
A team manager for the State basketball team from 1986-89, Ramsey is a film producer whose credits include E! network show "Talk Soup" and work for the History Channel. He is volunteering to help N.C. State review and restore coaches' game film discovered in a dusty closet at Reynolds Coliseum. He is part of an N.C. State team cataloging and storing the game film and other priceless artifacts from the school's athletics history.
"It's like an archaeological dig," Ramsey said of the recovered film, which goes as far back as 1946.
Thirty-two filing cabinets containing files on an estimated 6,000 athletes from throughout school history have been moved from the dark, dusty basement at Reynolds to a clean storage room at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Gopack.com managing editor Tim Peeler has discovered jerseys worn by Thompson, State quarterbacks Roman Gabriel and Philip Rivers, rare game programs from more than 60 years ago and important awards and citations stored mostly at Reynolds.
Interns Blake Scher and Donald Bowens have helped Peeler, spending recent weeks working with memorabilia that could have a multitude of uses. Peeler envisions duplicating the game film in DVDs that could be sold to the public, and he dreams of some day creating an N.C. State athletics museum or hall of fame.
Athletic director Lee Fowler said the economic crisis makes it impossible to consider building a hall of fame right now, but he said it's important to create an inventory of precious sports relics from State's past.
"We're going to make sure it's preserved at this point, until we can figure out what to do with it," Fowler said. "We have found some stuff that we didn't know was there, that was in the back of rooms and things like that for a long time."
Lost in the shuffle
Peeler credits retired senior associate athletic director Frank Weedon with having the foresight to save much of the memorabilia.
Weedon, 79, was in charge of publicity for N.C. State and stored many game programs, jerseys and awards that officials at some other schools might not have kept.
"That's where your history is, right there," Weedon said of the memorabilia. "You've got to find some place to keep it, if you think it's of value."
However, many items were lost in the shuffle as the school moved various offices between Reynolds, what's now the Case Academic Center and its current athletics headquarters in the Weisiger-Brown building. Other items were misplaced when the lobby of the Murphy Center football complex was outfitted with memorabilia.
The game film could have been destroyed in 2005, when a malfunctioning electrical transformer sparked a fire that caused $900,000 in damage at Reynolds. The closet holding the game film was unaffected, though, because the fire was quickly contained.
What's left is a treasure trove of reel-to-reel film in various states of decay.
Scher said the vinegar-like stench of decaying film was overpowering at times.
Bowens, who sometimes wears a dust mask, helped wipe the tapes clean.
"It wasn't fun," said Bowens, who's a wide receiver on N.C. State's football team. "Not at all." " |
