Durham listed as 5th out of top 10 places to live....apparently the makers of the list have never been to Durham.

well, they say right there in the article what their selection criteria was...

Quote :
"We looked for affordable communities that have strong economies and plenty of fun things to do."

Affordable housing in Durham: Yep
Plenty of jobs in Durham: Yep
Things to do in Durham: Yep

Now, it sounds like your beef is with the selection criteria. I'm not saying I particularly agree with this....just stating that in this article, it looks like they didn't look at crime, education, socio economic status, transportation, etc...

I agree with all the naysayers, primarily because I hate thriving music scenes and am terrified to death of black people.

To be fair, Durham isn't the absolute shit hole it was 10-20 years ago, but whoever wrote that list is high if they think it is a great place to live. I think they are confusing The Triangle/Raleigh-Durham, with Durham itself.

Not even remotely comparable.

Durham has some nice areas, and a lot of good restaurants, live music, etc.

I've lived in Durham for the past 3 years and I think it's a great place to live. Good bars, excellent restaurants, decent night life (downtown, and brightleaf area), the Bulls. Great places places to live, downtown lofts, and affordable houses that are not ghetto (I know because I live in such a neighborhood)

I challenge the haters to hang with someone who knows Durham. They'll show you a good time.

FYI: Durham>>>>>>>>Fayetteville

Durham is kind of like Raleigh, but with better restaurants, more affordable housing, and less violent crime. Oh yea, our city council isn't bat shit crazy either, we don't do things like ban garbage disposals and play chicken little with the water supply. I've lived in both cities in the past year and Durham > Raleigh, so sorry.

Detroit has some great areas, so does Cleveland.

I wouldn't want to live in either one (or Durham) though.

Everybody knows that Durham has it's ugly parts, but there's plenty of ghettos in Raleigh of similar caliber. There's actually some really nice rural areas closer to the Orange County line.

The downtown area has actually come a long way over the past few years with the revitalization of the tobacco warehouse district, and tearing down of a lot of the old projects in the downtown area. Granted, there are some sketchy ass places if you want to go wander down Angier Ave and the outskirts of downtown, but the city as a whole has come a long way over the past 5-10 years.

Anybody comparing Detroit to Durham has never been to either place. Go play in the shit areas of Detroit. Please do my son.

I've been going to the ABSOLUTE SHITTIEST areas of Durham from an early age and have yet to have a problem my son. Detroit is absolutely no joke though and it makes Durham look like a little girl's tea party.

Also note that after having lived in Durham and Raleigh at one time or another for most of my life, I can safely say that Durham is a FAR better place to live. It's a much nicer place and I can't figure out where it is that these shit talking idiots are going in Durham. Is it that they only go to the "ghetto" parts of Durham when they go there?

Why in the hell would you go to the shittiest parts of Durham when you go there? I'm just not understanding why all you're seeing in Durham is ghetto, especially when the "ghetto" (And if you think Durham's a ghetto, you've never actually seen one) isn't really near any of the major attractions in Durham. The majority of Durham is extremely nice and there's nothing to do in the shitty parts really besides purchasing crack cocaine, so why are you idiots even venturing out into those areas?

Oh wait, I bet none of you shit talking pussies has even ventured over to Durham, apparently out of fear of being raped by an angry black man. So, do you tards go to the shitty parts of Raleigh whenever you go to Raleigh? If so, why? If not, why do you seem to only go to these places when you go to Durham? And if you don't go to the run down places in Durham, why are you calling it a ghetto? Do the shitty places in Raleigh make the rest of Raleigh a ghetto? If so, why? If not, why do you claim that's the case in Durham?

Then we can throw in the fact that the part of Raleigh that NCSU is located in is rather run down and is full of criminals, murderers and rapists as all of you damn well know. That means Raleigh is a ghetto, using your logic of course my sons.

Saab, I understand my son. But when my mother in law is in town and is staying at the Duke Inn, and she has to lock her doors and clutch her purse when we exit the freeway, that is not good for her perception of Durham my son.

Freeway exit my son. Going to an extremely nice place at 11:00 PM on a Friday can be scary when you have to travel through ruff areas to get there. The most scared my MIL has ever been was when a bear tried to knock down her birdfeeder. Black guys in 4x white shirts can be scary.

*Raises hand*
Though I've only been living in Durham for like two weeks now. I live near southpoint, which definitely doesn't feel unsafe, unless you go a few miles up Fayetteville and then it starts getting scary. Some people might argue whether Southpoint area is really "Durham" but it's in the city limits, right? Downtown is also pretty cool from what I've seen.
