I agree with all the naysayers, primarily because I hate thriving music scenes and am terrified to death of black people.

To be fair, Durham isn't the absolute shit hole it was 10-20 years ago, but whoever wrote that list is high if they think it is a great place to live. I think they are confusing The Triangle/Raleigh-Durham, with Durham itself.

6/9/2009 7:37:36 PM
you don't live in Raleigh-Durham? That city with an airport named after it?
6/9/2009 7:38:31 PM

good grief. not all of Durham is a fucking ghetto. I work in Durham, some of my family lives in Durham, etc
6/9/2009 8:24:40 PM
I've lived in Durham for the past 3 years and I think it's a great place to live. Good bars, excellent restaurants, decent night life (downtown, and brightleaf area), the Bulls. Great places places to live, downtown lofts, and affordable houses that are not ghetto (I know because I live in such a neighborhood)I challenge the haters to hang with someone who knows Durham. They'll show you a good time. FYI: Durham>>>>>>>>Fayetteville
doesn't durham have the most gang related violence? sounds like a great place for kids!
6/9/2009 8:25:12 PM

Durham is kind of like Raleigh, but with better restaurants, more affordable housing, and less violent crime. Oh yea, our city council isn't bat shit crazy either, we don't do things like ban garbage disposals and play chicken little with the water supply. I've lived in both cities in the past year and Durham > Raleigh, so sorry.

Detroit has some great areas, so does Cleveland. I wouldn't want to live in either one (or Durham) though.
6/10/2009 12:05:02 PM
How many people in this thread have lived in both Raleigh and Durham?
6/10/2009 12:07:54 PM
Everybody knows that Durham has it's ugly parts, but there's plenty of ghettos in Raleigh of similar caliber. There's actually some really nice rural areas closer to the Orange County line. The downtown area has actually come a long way over the past few years with the revitalization of the tobacco warehouse district, and tearing down of a lot of the old projects in the downtown area. Granted, there are some sketchy ass places if you want to go wander down Angier Ave and the outskirts of downtown, but the city as a whole has come a long way over the past 5-10 years.
6/10/2009 12:13:43 PM
Durhams a lot better than raleigh.
6/10/2009 12:13:54 PM

new bern avenue > roxboro roadraleigh does have a much simpler road system

Saab, I understand my son. But when my mother in law is in town and is staying at the Duke Inn, and she has to lock her doors and clutch her purse when we exit the freeway, that is not good for her perception of Durham my son.
