having just come from a trip to Philly, I can say that the entire city is dirty....
It smells like a mixture of cig. butts and urine.

Openings? If you don't even know if you have either job I'd apply to both and see which one offers you a position...

IIRC checkerboard is not a racist term, it just means the blacks and whites are clearly separated by physical location and/or socioeconomic class within the city

I could be wrong, but I doubt it

I think it actually refers to how the streets are laid out.

I thought that too, especially since I doubt the population of Baltimore is 50% native American.

That makes a lot of sense until you look at a fucking checkerboard.

Checkerboard state.... I think Slave is close with his description. Sorry Ernie, I know there are more squares than a normal checkerboard and some are actually rectangles and some have jagged sides.

I was half right...fully right if you assume the blacks are up to no good and the whites aren't, which most do

Did you read the page you grabbed that image from? It's about physical size and geographic layout of the counties. Nothing about class, race, or socioeconomic status (besides, there aren't any black people in Iowa).

If the term is about race, I would think it points towards blacks and whites living in close proximity, highly integrated communities. That makes more sense considering samwise's reservations about it being a "checkerboard city." She is, after all, a bible-thumping ultra-conservative racist.

A lot of cities are "checkerboard", it's like a grid of small neighborhoods each with their own character and social constitution. And you are right, but it's not always about race... My "square" is right next to a uber rich square, which borders an uber gay square, which borders a very poor square that you don't walk around in at night.

There's still people sitting on their roofs waiting for Govt help there.

But to answer the OP, I would choose Durham, great city.

FroshKiller: Your mom has two three different job openings. And none of them are worth going with in 50 feet of.

I went to Philly back in '02 or '03 and it wasn't too bad, but we stayed around the historical district.

i live in baltimore and love it. if you live in the right areas, then its really a great city. lots of stuff to do, lots of people in the young adult age range, and close proximity to a number of other big cities. plus, cost of living is relatively low compared to the surrounding areas.

I agree with the theme of this thread so far. Baltimore is much better. Then inner harbor area is very nice. Not to mention the proximity to just about anything you could possibly want to do for fun.

LOL! I'm from Kossuth County, Iowa. I lived across the creek from Spring Valley Golf Course which my uncle used to manage before he died and now his son does.
