Is there a better app out there rather than Prt Scr, Ctrl-v into paint, select the area I want, cut paste, save.

I think I had a firefox plugin that you could do this with webpages, but I'm wanting to do it within windows itself. I have about 20 different spice graphs I need to save into .jpg format and the tool I am using (AvanWaves) can only print them out.

Edit

Figures three seconds after I post this I see holding alt will get just the active window. This will probably be suitable enough.

This AvanWaves doesn't run on a mac. I know it's hard to believe, but software that actually gets real shit done, as opposed to frou frou shit like video editing, likes to live on Windoze.

if you're on vista or 7 it comes with a snipping tool to select part of the screen. But like you found out alt+print screen handles 90% of use cases.

Seriously, use the snipping tool in Vista/Win7. You can snip by window, and save to file right there.

depends on what you're doing...xp/vista/win7's utility doesn't hold a candle to firefox's screengrab add-on...if you haven't used it, you don't know what you're talking about because i think even you would have a hard time sucking microsoft's cock when you use a utility like screengrab

why would you EVER need a screen grab tool?

primarily, grabbing the full page, rather than just the visible portion...as part of that, having the option of capturing a particular frame instead of the whole visible portion

i use it to generate how-to documents with screenshots for web applications that i write

win7 was a piece of horseshit for me during the week i tried it (for reasons i documented in the win7 thread), so i can't speak to that one

as for vista, when i hit "print screen", i get a zoom window in the top right part of the screen and a crosshair selection tool...i do not get the automatic "save" options of "complete page/frame", "visible portion", "selection", and "window"

already screen grab is more usable than the vista one...i'm not saying those aren't options on the vista tool, but it can't be nearly as intuitive if it's not available upon the initial keypress

as for gadwin, it gives me similar options when i use the print screen key...again, the vista tool doesn't do that (at least not intuitively)

*shrug*...i prefer the functionality of well-developed free software to the relative uselessness of built-in tools (although, perhaps i'm missing something...what does the vista/win7 tool do that these don't? and can it be set to be a one-click thing instead of navigating a series of menus?)

You do realize that "built-in tools" are well-developed free software, right? The point is, the OP had an activity he wanted to accomplish. The Vista/Win7 snipping tool does EXACTLY what he wants. Nothing more to download, learn or deal with.

And Gadwin Web Snapshot is $24.95, not free. It does look like a very polished app though, and I'm sure for your needs it's pretty awesome.

i agree with you...if he only wants to do ONE thing with NO options, it does exactly that one thing...some of us prefer increased functionality in our "free" software, and so we sometimes have to look past the "this should be good enough for everyone!" crap included in the not-at-all-free software for something that isn't simplistic and functionally stagnant

No, see, unlike you I am able to realize when I am being a fucking retard. Your online persona is one of the most self-centered, toolbag retards I've ever witnessed. I've NEVER said it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Win7 didn't make your life more difficult. Your absolute inability to adapt or change made your life more difficult. I'm sorry you are incapable of recognizing that there are non-absolutist positions in life.

Quote :
"absolutely! microsoft has NEVER put out anything shy of extraordinary!"

Way to change the subject there. What Microsoft built-in tool is NOT well-developed? It may not be feature rich, but that is an entrely different argument. Please back this up with something other than your baseless assertions.

Quote :

The snipping tool has quite a few activites and options. It does more than one thing. It has multiple common options. It's only had one release, so how is it functionally stagnant? And no one has ever said it's "good enough for everyone!". I said it meets the needs of the OP, while your recommendation is exponentially more complicated.

My point is, as you are apparently to thick to understand, that MORE functionality DOES NOT make a product BETTER. I'll be glad to point you to 80 years of evidence to back me up on this.

HAHAHA you are hilarious. http://gadwin.com/purchase/pricing.htm

Dear God you are ignorant. Printscreen doesn't have the ONE feature you were praising about Gadwin's Web Screenshot. But good attempt at backpedaling.

Quote :
"microsoft sure does lube you up good, don't they?"

I realize your tiny brain may have a hard time comprehending this, but disagreeing with your recommendation does not make me a fanboy. I'm sure it makes you feel better about yourself by making ignorant assertions about other people, but I'm afraid you are both incorrect and making yourself look pretty foolish.

Yes, I work for Microsoft. Yes, I have a different perspective of Microsoft's products because I work there. No, I do not instantly think everything Microsoft makes is the bee's knees. There are quite a few offerings I am less than happy with. Just because I am not a vocal opponent of those products does not make me "suck microsoft's cock day and night" as you so childishly put it. I have a very fair and balanced opinion of software and technology products, which is absolutely evidenced by my postings on this site.

You're selective reading, memory and judgement does not define my positions. Before you continue making such stupid, infantile, and ignorant commentary about me, why don't you think for a second about what you are doing and either read the body of my opinion, or at the least, act your age.

do you have difficulty reading more than a few words at a time? do conversations elude you? do you have difficulty following the course of a discussion? since you're apparently retarded, let me take that single quote you used and put it into context so that your overtaxed brain might come to a realization you can't manage on your own:

Quote :

Quote :

Quote :
"primarily, grabbing the full page, rather than just the visible portion...as part of that, having the option of capturing a particular frame instead of the whole visible portion"

where the FUCK do you see a mention of gadwin's printscreen? when you say,

Quote :
"Which PrintScreen doesn't do."

i have nothing to say except "no shit, sherlock...good thing i never claimed anything of the sort"

Quote :
"And Good job making up even more statistics. Still waiting on these horrible built-in tools you claimed."

hah, you're the only one that doesn't realize that your posts are a broken record mostly likely having to do with "microsoft is awesome!" or "torrents are evil and you're all bad people!"

Quote :
"Still waiting on how this is fanboy shit by telling the kid he already has a tool that should work for him."

jeebus, you don't get it, do you? the fanboy shit comes in when you tout the built-in bare-minimum tools as being as good as the FREE tools you can download that do twice as much...i never ONCE said the built-in tools wouldn't do what the OP wanted...all i implied was that if you want more than the "this should be good enough for every user!" featureless shit microsoft likes to put in, gadwin+screengrab is awesomegonuts (though microsoft IS getting better...give it 10 years and they might actually release an OS with the simple tools you can get for free out of half a dozen apps NOW)

i noticed you're FINALLY not arguing that printscreen isn't free...did you actually try clicking the link and give reading a shot?

You know, I'm not a huge Neon fan because I think he is pompous as fuck and will never admit when he has been destroyed in an argument, but his MS fanboism isn't nearly as overblown as you're claiming, ESPECIALLY considering he actually works there. The rest of the points you are making about him not reading but sticking to an argument is classic Neon, but I can't get on board with the MS hate.

well they do basic stuff. Full screen cap, individual window cap, box/freeform cap. For 90% of use cases this is enough. If you want something that grabs individual tabs or something from firefox, sure a firefox plugin makes more sense. But why bother with getting that if you aren't capturing firefox specific things, was my point.

^ exactly...it works great for MOST people...which is why, when i suggested the two additional tools and was asked why you would use them over the built-in ones, i gave examples of how microsoft's tools aren't up to snuff, which then offended certain people...this thread has gone like this:

1.) OP makes a thread called "best prt scr capture app"
2.) OP asked for a "better app" than windows print screen tool, which implies that he's tried it

right here, microsoft's included tools get tossed out as they don't apply...they are hardly the "best" and there are DEFINITELY "better" tools out there that are more functional, for free

3.) before the first reply, OP edits post and says he's found that the included tool will "probably be suitable enough"
4.) people make suggestions, including references to third-party apps and windows built-in tool
5.) quagmire02 mentions gadwin and screengrab
6.) Noen RESPONDS IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE HE'S FUCKING PISSED THAT SOMEONE SUGGESTED ANYTHING BUT A MICROSOFT PRODUCT...it's what he does and he does it well
7.) someone asks quagmire02 how the suggested tools are better than the windows one
8.) quagmire02 points out that microsoft's tool is extremely basic and that additional free tools offer more flexibility and options at no cost
9.) Noen says vista/win7 does exactly what the OP wants (true) but completely ignores the title of the thread referencing the "best" print screen capture app (which the vista/win7 tool is far from)...he also continually references a paid-for version of an application that wasn't even mentioned because he's a stupid son of a whore who can't focus on anything long enough to make sure he has a fuck's clue what he's talking about
10.) quagmire02 calls Noen a microsoft fanboy a lot of times and constantly mentions the fact that Noen struggles with reading comprehension
11.) ...
12.) ...
13.) quagmire02 makes list at work because he's bored
