Using "www" in URLs is dumb and unnecessary. Why the fuck do we need that?
The only possible advantage I can see to using that convention is to make clear that something is a website address. If a computer illiterate sees "cannab.is" they likely won't recognize it as a website address -- but "www.cannab.is" looks more like one....

Willy Nilly's retarded post reminded me of this

Quote :
"iamges.google.com

yes the typo is correct

i bet if you bought this domain you would get lots and lots of hits

or maybe gogole.com?

i remember linux bought the domain 'microsfot.com' which seems pretty clever

any other similiar circumstances you guys know of?"

historical naming conventions...IIRC, the reason for the "www" is to identify the web server (instead of something like the FTP server, which would be referenced by "ftp")

i suppose your argument is that, by default, a lack of a prefix should reference the web server, but that then limits what people can do with the namespaces they've purchased...what if you purchase http://thisnamespaceisonlyusedforfiledownloads.com/ and you want the default to be the FTP part of your site and the www space would be used for the web documents? by your argument, you couldn't do that

if you're a programmer of any kind, you should recognize the advantages of good naming conventions...sure, MOST sites probably use both the domain and the www prefix with the domain in the same way, but the CONVENTION states that your prefix can identify different parts or services associated with your site and that makes much more sense
