Series means several that make a set, like the Lord of the Rings movies.

Grade is how one would rank the set as a whole, often on a scale of 1-100 and/or with a letter grade (A-F, excluding E).

Ask your NCIS buddies. They understand time in grade.

I, too, use this alphabet when spelling over the phone. I'm fairly certain people think I'm either weird (due to some odd words) or a drunk (whiskey). fucking noobs is what they are though.

It's used to describe the position level and salary band for a civil service job in the federal government.

For example someone hired at GS-7 (General Schedule, Step 7) might work in a position that has promotion potential to reach GS-9

Hope that helps. I don't know a lot about it, someone else may be able to describe better.

^^ Ding ding ding. Soon-to-be working federal employee myself.

Series describes what your job function is (i.e. management, HR, etc). I believe 0900 is the engineering series, with more specific numbers depending on what your subfield is. Needless to say I was rocking out 0900 in the search box on studentjobs & usajobs.

Ask any other questions about this crap in here as well. It took me a while to get used to some of the lingo, but it's becoming more manageable (bureaucracy is a weird language to learn). TWW's like yahoo's answers stuff except we treat your dirty and call you names.

Also, steps: This can be a pretty significant pay difference depending on the grade they're hiring at. For instance, at the GS 7 grade, it is about a $10k swing from step 1 to step 10. Make SURE you know what level they consider hiring people at, and determine if they have a policy of hiring individuals without a civil service record (i.e. not previous federal employees) at the step 1 level ONLY. This can be the difference between a decent out-of-college salary and a not-so-decent why-the-fuck-did-i-go-to-college salary.

Also, take note of the following: When looking at government job postings, they may not include the cost of living adjustment for each area. For instance, where I'm working, GS 7 step 10 is $53,565/yr, but GS 7 step 10 is ~$42,500/yr at the base level without a cost of living adjustment. So, accounting for step level and cost of living adjustment is essential to understanding what you're worth to the government.

Here's a chart that shows all the base level salaries without a cost of living adjustment. Most places you will likely consider working at will have a cost of living adjustment of 5-22%.

http://www.govcentral.com/benefits/articles/1754-detailed-salary-table-of-the-gs-pay-scale---2008-

If you want more specific numbers (important if you're weighing offers) check this out for a locality adjusted pay scale. I don't believe the areas are in any particular order so just scroll through it til you find yours (or search for it).

http://www.opm.gov/oca/09tables/pdf/saltbl.pdf

Hope this helps. Also, check the benefits you get with the job as well. Federal benefits kick ass, at least compared to what I have seen offered at other employers (not counting the DOT (which has outstanding benefits) and UFI (which had outstanding benefits and is currently in a financial crisis due to the temporary construction industry implosion).

Thanks you guys....all very helpful.... apparently it's listed as an IA job but the pay thing is totally different for that and GS apparently because the job lists the promo potential at '04' but the salary range is 84,477.00 - 136,426.00 so totally different 'grading' system there. Not saying I qualify or anything but I'll be one bad ass bitch if I get the job. You all will be very scared of me and shit...

Sounds kind of like it's using the YD-XX payband system.

There's a number of different pay systems available for civil servants in the federal govt. I'm not sure how the YD-XX payband system "steps up", but if you google whatever the letters/acronym is before that pay grade they listed you can figure out just how pay is leveled/whatever for each system. I think the YD-XX system is more like a private industry sort of job where your pay can be adjusted in any sort of increment that your manager deems appropriate.

Good luck with landing the job.

Which federal department is this in?

If this is the DoD more likely you will be under NSPS (different setup than GS)

- Caveat - some DoD White Collar Jobs that are part of a Union are still under GS

If this is Homeland Security they have a different system than GS and NSPS

State Department - Some parts are different than GS due to Job types/locations

I work for DoD YD801-02 is my level which equals out to be a Engineer - Professional - Pay Band 02

My equivilant is GS 13 in the DC area

Well I went from 7 to 9 after six months, then 9 to 11 a year after that.

Actually I think that's what the shipyard does. I know it goes up to GS9 step 3 or something after 6 months.

I'm sure I'll learn more once I actually start working there.
