It can be a useful way to network with business contacts and people who might be employers. It's more of a professional's social networking tool as compared to facebook (though facebook is also used heavily by many of corporations since many of us were silly enough to convince our parents to get facebook pages). If anything, it's a nice thought to know that you've got easy access to a number of business contacts in case you're looking for employment.

You will also find that when your dad works in sales and you work in engineering that the app isn't that useful to you.

It got me my current job. And I've helped several friends make job connections because of linkedin. It's an amazing site, although I only check in every couple of months.

I am on linkedin and have been trying to get a job in raleigh for about 6 months. it clearly isnt working. I will send messages to people asking how they like their workplace as a lead in to, "are you hiring any engineers?"as stated before, it clearly isnt working. it is fun to be professional friends with people who are your real friends though.... i guess.

^ i'm glad i don't get any of those messages - has that ever worked for anyone?
6/16/2009 11:49:04 AM
i've never tried that. and i've never gotten any since i've been unemployed the whole time i've been on linkedin.

There's an option to set what types of correspondence you're looking for, right? So if someone says they're open to talking with people about new employee opportunities, I see no reason not to mention it to them. But if they aren't, then bringing it up may just annoy them.

^ i do abide by these rules of etiquette (sp?)and normally people love talking about their jobs and their workplace. if i get a bad vibe then i just dont message back
