oh geeze. where do we start here. first, what the hell is a 'best' guitar?
6/14/2009 8:20:19 PM
the air guitar always sounds just right
6/14/2009 8:21:09 PM
obviously there's no "best" its your personal opinion but sound quality, looks, etc. the total packagei.e. if money wasn't an issue, and you could only have one of each, what would it be?
6/14/2009 8:21:53 PM

Alembic makes some of the prettiest electric guitars I've ever seen... I don't know how they sound though...I am quite partial to my Ibanez S series
6/14/2009 9:34:57 PM
i'm quite partial to these two:

teles and SGs for me.
6/14/2009 9:46:41 PM
^^That's a G&L ASAT, basically Leo Fender's final improvement on the Tele design. Awesome guitar.(I have a G&L myself so I'm a little biased)

i know it's played out, but my first guitar was a fender strat (red) and I always wanted a les pauli also wanted an Ovation (they have a distinct sound, but i like it...)and a nylon stringed acoustic (another distinct sound I always liked)
6/15/2009 10:57:55 AM
I'm helping a kid I know build a carbon fiber bass. its going to be the best.
6/15/2009 10:59:30 AM
^^ nothing wrong with a strat. i love playing mine.
6/15/2009 11:00:43 AM
Ovations are cool. They do have a distinctive sound (how could they not with such an unorthodox design...)I had the opportunity to get a lot of playing time on a 70's Guild 12-string back when I was learning guitar and I've missed that thing. Love to pick one up someday. I'd also really love one of the classic archtop electric jazz guitars, the Gibson L-5CES being my personal "holy grail".As far as solidbodies go I'm very happy with my G&L Legacy, but in addition I wouldn't mind a PRS, Gibson Firebird, or an ASAT/Tele. Les Pauls do have a nice sound but they're so damn heavy.
6/15/2009 11:37:33 AM
How about suggestions for a decent acoustic for a beginner-slash-just-messing-around guitar?
6/15/2009 11:47:17 AM
I really only like the look of single cut guitars. Although the Ibanez Jem is pretty cool looking.
6/15/2009 11:54:20 AM
i liked the ones dimebag darrel played.

I imagine most people in here couldn't play anything that would sound better than on something like this:

only fancy fuckers who can't play need two pickups

^ Oh, Christ! Here we go.
6/15/2009 6:59:51 PM
I have a fender american deluxe strat that plays good. I like les pauls too though.
6/15/2009 7:16:32 PM
yeah, nothing says snobbery like a junkie from queens in women's clothes
6/15/2009 7:19:36 PM
thanks for the love one the G&L. it sounds amazing, but the guild is really my go to guitar. its actually a semi-hollow body. at some point i'd like to have an ES-335 or something similar. i also have a strat that rarely gets played, but i'm holding onto it because it was my first electric guitar. i bought it from the music loft back when they were off of wake forest rd. to be honest, i'm really not into 'gear' anymore. i just like coming home from work and picking up my guitar for a couple of minutes to unwind. i may purchase an acoustic to play out on the porch, but it won't be anything super expensive.I wish i could find some people to jam with sometime, but everyone on craigslist is all super serious and wants "to be fully committed to the band...its all about the music man!!!" pfff. i ain't got time for that, i just want to sit around and goof off every now and then. i don't have the chops (or maybe just not the confidence) to show up alone at an open mike. I have a '91 Gibson studio and I love it. The guitar player in the band im in has a paul reed smith and I dont like it as much and its worth about 5 times as much.
6/15/2009 8:34:51 PM
I've always loved the '70s-era Les Paul sound, but all Lindsey Buckingham's Rick Turner guitars have always sounded awesome to me, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-27F8EcJ1SQhttp://www.renaissanceguitars.com/

My favorite out of my guitars: Gibson Firebird Vbut this is like asking "What's the best car?"
6/15/2009 9:19:48 PM
paul languedoc is now selling directly to the public.i like the sound of the hollow body electric.
6/15/2009 9:30:34 PM
is that the guy that made trey anastasio's guitar? its got a distinct sound, but i prefer a warmer jazzier sound.
6/15/2009 9:34:32 PM
its pretty easy to get a warm jazzy sound out of any decent guitar
6/15/2009 9:35:46 PM
Yeah, any decent neck pickup with the tone rolled off to 5-6.
6/16/2009 3:35:55 AM
the best guitar is the one i happen to be holding when you ask me
6/16/2009 3:44:49 AM
also, don't forget the gretsch white penguin
6/16/2009 3:54:33 AM
^ Now that is sharp. The first band I ever played in was with a guitar player who had a red Chet Atkins.
6/16/2009 4:05:50 AM
not much acoustic love in this thread! pretty much all I play these days anyhow...Taylor > Martin in my opinion...love the bright, trebbly sound.
6/16/2009 5:08:39 PM
I used to feel the same way about Taylors. As I've migrated from Fenders (and especially the super-bright ones like Mustangs) to P-90 guitars, I've found myself attracted to the rounder, warmer sound of Martins.Good stuff either way.
