This looks intriguing, and it's got a great cast...I'm sure I'll catch it in the theater when it comes out

I'm glad that Scorcese isn't one of those directors who finds one actor that he likes and then casts him as the lead in every single movie he makes for the next decade.

I haven't seen The Aviator, but Gangs of New York and The Departed were both excellent so I don't see what the fucking problem is. Are you gonna bitch about Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale or Sidney Lumet and Pacino next? What a fucking tard.

RAWWWWWWR! HOW DARE YOU QUESTION SCORCESE! I LIKE TWO OF HIS MOVIES!

I was actually going to bitch about Scorcese and DeNiro next, followed by George Lucas and Harrison Ford.

I like a lot more than 2 of them, but there are only 2 of them with Dicaprio that I've seen.

I just got back from watching it. I thought it was one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Some of the movies they've been coming up with lately are just absolutely idiotic. I give 4.5 stars :-)

I read the book and knew what was coming but that doesn't at all take away from the movie. It was brilliantly done.

I just got back from the theater. I thought it was a great movie. Its a good psychological thriller. This is probably one of my favorite Scorceses films.

I didn't figure out the twist until it was revealed. This is the most enjoyable way to watch a movie with a twist, satisfying. It has lots of great actors and one of my favorite, Ben Kingsley. Ohh yeah the future Freddy Kruegor is also stars in one of the best scenes. Jackie Earl Haley is the man.

alright, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say by indicating there is a big twist, you're giving out spoilers. Half the impact of a bit twist is because you aren't expecting a big twist. The other half is knowing what the twist is. But, I'm guessing Leo is the killer, he's crazy and making the whole thing up, or Bruce Willis is dead. I'm glad it's a great movie, and I'm looking forward to it, but shit.

Its a psychological thriller, for it not to have a twist ending would be a twist. I don't think saying its a twist ending is giving anything away.

Pretty good psych thriller, although the twist is pretty obvious. The exact details of the twist are less obvious, but the twist in general is pretty damn obvious.

Saw it tonight. Twist was obvious, but at the same time the very last few lines are very interesting. Those who haven't seen it yet, make sure you pay attention to what is all said at the very end. Sick ass movie though.

If you want to know the twist and why the ending makes that twist that much more interesting then read the Wikipedia summary. I'm gonna try to avoid posting apoilers on here.

I just remember something said by either DiCaprio or that other guy at the very end that made me wonder what state of mind DiCaprio was actually in (regressed back or not). I guess it was kind of implied and that there wasn't much said about it other than a few words before the credits rolled.

*Spoiler Alert*

I thought it could be argued that he really was taken in by the people. The ending probably showed that he was crazy, but I thought it left it open-ended. One could argue that the hospital staff won, and CREATED a crazy and delusional experimental patient. With all the drugs and everything, Dicaprio could have been persuaded by his dreams and hallucinations that he was in fact the bad guy. He ended up going for a lobotomy which was what Kingsley said he tried to avoid - he could have been an experimental patient waiting to happen. Kingsley could have hidden all the experimental stuff, knowing that Dicaprio would eventually make it to the lighthouse.

Pretty good movie though - he was probably insane, but it's cool to think.

***Response to spoiler w/ spoilers***

Disagree...there was an event that occurred very early on that was extremely telling of the truth, and that was Andrew Laidis went crazy and created an alternate life. That event was the first thing I noticed that was "off" with the story. When we see the first dream sequence of he and his wife in their apartment, his wife's back is smoldering ash b/c she "died in a fire". Then, when he holds her from behind her stomach was bleeding. When I saw that, I thought "that's odd he would dream of that...so did she did in a fire or did she bleed?" It wasn't until he had his break due to their experiment and he recalled the actual memory of shooting his wife that the dream made sense.

*** Spoiler Alert ***

Ok, so my wife and I both watched the movie I and came to two different conclusions about what really happened.

I went along with the final 20 min of the movie and believed that Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo were telling the truth, that DiCaprio was crazy and they were role playing the entire time. At the end where they are sitting on the door step, DiCaprio has been cured and is not repressing the actual events. He knows that his family is dead and is no longer crazy, the treatment works. He makes statements to Ruffalo to pretend that he is still crazy so that he will get the labatomy. He makes a statement something to the effect "I think the question is would you rather live as a monster or die as a hero". Implying that he is not crazy and knows what he is doing. Basically committing suicide instead of living on knowing the fact that his family has been tragically murdered. The reaction from Ruffalo also confirms this. I believe this is still the correct analysis of the ending.

My wife doesn't get the twist and believes that Kingsley and Ruffalo have actually tricked him to come to the island so that they can perform a lobotomy on him. They come up with a elaborate plan to make him crazy. She believes that the scene where he admits the repressed memories is him giving in to their scheme. Also she explains the last scene as him giving up and not fighting and would rather be lobotomized instead of living the rest of his life in a crazy house.

I think it is interesting because there isn't a lot of evidence to refute her take on the movie. I think a lot of people who watch the movie can come away with her impression of what actually happened. I think the one piece of evidence that makes her explanation implausible is the fact that Kingsley tells DiCaprio about the girl in his dreams that says "You could have saved me". No where in the movie does DiCaprio tell anyone about the subject of his dreams.

I think this movie is interesting because it is almost like one of those pictures that you look at it one way and its one thing then you look at it another way it is a totally different picture. If you take out a few key pieces of evidence then I think you could have a movie with two endings simultaneously that the viewer would have to ponder, what really did happen.

Also in that scene, she is looking out the window at the lake (with the gazebo swing) where the drownings occur. so that is another way that the fire "memory" is mixed up with the drowning memory. Also, he says that 4 people died in the fire (= 3 kids plus wife died in drowning).

In the first scene of the movie when DiCaprio tells his partner that his wife died from a fire in her building, he says "She died from the smoke, that's important" or something along those lines.

Does that have any significance? I kept waiting for the movie to address that.

^ Good point. I forgot about that. Not sure if it was just a throw away line, or if it had any significance to the rest of the plot though.

I think that's just a detail in the dude's delusion. Dying from smoke inhalation is different than being consumed by flames...for a lot of people, that's an important detail.
