I like this program, but I keep having my computer go completely black and not respond when I add in transitions or effects of any kind. I've tried to look up some problems and have determined that it's not a codec problem and was wondering if anyone had any other ideas? I like this program because it's pretty easy to pick up and understand off the bat.

Any thoughts?

Pretty much.

You can go get the new Beta http://download.live.com/moviemaker

Way less functionality, but it's a lot more stable. Also unfortunately, the only sub-$100 video editor I've ever liked has been iMovie/iDVD on the Mac. All the cheap PC video editors sucked donkey.

Well I only use it because it came with my computer and I'm cheap and don't need to do too much with it. I'll try using the beta version, thanks!
