Lulz. It's a steam plant.

If state had a power plant on-campus everybody would be dying from the burning ash and pollution falling from the skies, haha.

But yeah, try asking at the front desk at the gym? If not there, ask in the basement where you check out those faggy little shorts and equipment/lockers.

Mindstorm, that was one of the dumbest things i have ever read. A steam plant is a type of power plant. He never said coal plant.

^Learn about your campus before you try to call someone out. Steam plants generate steam, not power (at least in this case). There's a steam plant on Yarbrough and one on Cates. Get it straight.

In a steam power plant, yes, it spins a turbine to generate electricity. That's not what happens on campus. Before you try to bust balls, make sure you're not gonna look like a dumbass.

Jesus fucking christ. I'm glad that 99% of people are probably ignorant as to what steam plants on university campuses are actually for, because that is going to temper my response to this.

The steam plants on NCSU's campus are part of an old and consistently maintained (and periodically updated) steam heating system used to heat just about all the buildings on campus. The steam plant on yarborough drive (an amazing place) and the one near the gym feed into a series of steam lines that are either direct buried or run through the steam tunnels you hear rumors about when you first enter this campus. Almost all established universities have had or currently use a system like this and are now in the process of upgrading and replacing their old steam lines as the cost to upgrade to a high-pressure hot water system is much, much higher than the cost to replace worn out steam lines and to use the systems already in-place and maintained in existing buildings. The other reason (less often cited) that we aren't using a high-pressure hot water system on campus right now is that the water in those pipes is so hot and at such high pressure that a minor leak will more or less ensure instant death or critical injury to somebody standing next to said pipe at the time of rupture. With steam you will likely have a burn, but it is not so hot and under such high pressure that it poses a severe threat to your very existence.

I do not claim to be an expert on these systems by any means, but I worked for the company that designed the master plan for NCSU's utilities (including steam lines), that built the modern utilities going into the vet school campus, and which let me design a minor (~$185,000) addendum to an existing vet school utilities project. Not trying to be a dick here, but it's very apparent that you have no idea what steam is used for in the context of a steam plant on a college/military/medical campus.

[Edited on June 16, 2009 at 2:37 AM. Reason : They also designed and engineered the yarborough drive steam plant.]

Here, look at the page in here titled "Central Steam Distribution". Pages 20 & 21 out of 25. It doesn't show all the expansion loops and all that but you can at least see where the lines are going and how many utilities there are under your feet when you're walking around on campus.

Any time they are tearing up the roads or a parking lot on campus... they're probably working on the steam lines.

I don't know if it has gotten any better but several years ago it was really, really bad. Probably had a lot to do with the building renovations as well. I remember several cases where they'd rip up a parking lot, fix/replace the lines, fill in the hole, pave over it, and rip it up again within a few days of 'finishing' the repair job.

I think they were just after the prime parking spots in that section of campus.

There's one at the Powell Drive park. Haven't been in years, but I usually see people out there when I drive by. Probably 3-4 miles from central campus.
