Well, maybe not the the secret of life, but it must be one of them.

The secret: Stop riding your bicycle on major roads, ASSHOLE.

#1) You are essentially playing in traffic. This is something you should have learned not to do as a toddler. You never play in traffic under any circumstances.

#2) It doesn't matter how much exercise you get from riding your bike down Avent Ferry. If a drunk driver or any shitty driver for that matter (and there are a lot of shitty drivers) knocks you out of your spandex pants it won't matter what you got your heart rate up to, as you likely will no longer have a heart rate. You'd probably be more healthy to stay home and smoke a pack of cigarettes.

#3) The spandex pants. Seriously, what could possibly be driving this urge to wear spandex pants other than homosexuality?

#4) In many cases you are causing traffic to slow to your pace. Nobody wants to be driving behind some asshole wearing sweaty spandex pants going 10 mph down the road.

#5) If you really want to wear your spandex pants, take it to a park where they have designated bike paths, and stay the hell out of my way.

I don't have a problem with spandex pants, but I agree that bikers should not be biking down avent ferry during rush hour. there are so many cars following so closely and the buses that keep stopping every 30 feet, its like car wreck alley.

1. its illegal to ride the bike on a sidewalk.

2. perhaps the better solution here would be for people to not drive drunk.

3. so that loose pants do not get caught in the moving parts and cause you to fall in the road.

4. then protest to wake county to create more bike lanes like they have in other major cities.

5. most bike paths are incredibly short and many of the bike paths in raleigh actually extend to major roads for miles at a time.

Have you even tried thinking of your position, or do you just like bitching about your situation without actually looking for a solution. I assume you're female?

I see we have some stubborn bicyclist on this message board. I merely tried to warn you using common sense that you shouldn't play in traffic.

Your strong desire to be healthy could very well end up being your undoing. How ironic.

And IRSeriousCat, the solution you proposed of "people to not drive drunk" is laughable. It's already illegal to drive drunk, but that doesn't stop people from doing it. Not to mention you didn't argue the other point of sober shitty drivers in general.

Also I rode a bike as a kid and never wore normal pants, and guess what, I never had my clothing entangled in moving parts. That's fucking retarded.

Sure, it is legal to ride your bike down major roads, but it takes a real stupid motherfucker to actually do it. I'm just calling a spade a spade.

#1) Cyclist have as much a right to the road as any car

#2) More reason for you to cut them slack and not ride up on their ass.

#3)Probably worried about the fact that he/she planned to sweat a fuck ton and didnt want to wear their Jorts, chafings a bitch bro

#4)You are probably driving too fast anyways, what do you have to take a shit? Why are you in such a big hurry? Cant miss Oprah? Cant stand to wait until the other lane is clear and then make a pass? its a five lane road for christs sake just chill until you can pass.

#5) Maybe said rider isnt able to own a car and Bicycle is his or her only means of transportation to their shit job they work 6 days a week to keep food on the table. Not all cyclists have the means to strap their brand new $texas ride to the top of their SUV and drive to the park for a few laps. Some might even argue that defeats the purpose of cycling all together.

Ive only started really biking everyday over the last 6 months as I have started commuting to work on my bike. I swear no one (well very very few) know how to approach a bike rider. People spend so much time in their cars that they really forget how big their cars are and how fast they move. Being wrapped in metal and glass also isolates you from your surroundings making it less personal when you nearly kill said cyclists

no, I dont think bike riders are the dangerous ones

That's the point I'm trying to make. It's dangerous to rely on other people for your safety when you are riding a 30 pound bike completely exposed in the same lane as multi-thousand pounds cars driving 50 mph.

Not sure why everyone is saying "you need to do this" so I can ride my bike safely. I'm a safe driver, but guess what, not everyone else is. Riding a bicycle down major roads is not safe. I don't see how anyone can argue that point.

As I'm sure you were able to discern my point wasn't as much we should do something about drunk driving as it was to address the idiocy of claiming that a biker hit by a drunk driver is the fault of the cyclist. I didn't go on further to address the sober shitty driver because I figured that anyone would be able to apply the position on drunk drivers to shitty drivers as well.

you never wore normal pants? i assume you meant you wore normal pants or you never wore spandex pants. what i'm also going to assume is that you weren't constantly going 15mph minimum and up to 25mph for hours at a time. what was said above about chaffing is also a valid point of note. regardless of the varied practicalities for wearing spandex why is this of such concern to you? how does their choice of apparel imposition you? do guys in spandex tempt the restraint of latent homosexual desires?

so its illegal for them to ride on sidewalks and legal but stupid for them to ride on the roads? is your suggestion people not ride bikes at all?

think before speaking, it'll get you more respect around here. even for an alias.

to be fair, bicyclists to often times go out of their way to hold up traffic and to "display" their "right to the road"... often times in massive groups that dangerously clog up streets. they deserve to have their bikes crushed in my opinion.

on the other hand, if there is a biker that keeps as far right as he can, and lets faster traffic (you know, traffic going near or at the speed limit) pass, then no big deal.

^ not to mention bicyclist are supposed to follow traffic laws just as a car does. Far too often you'll pass them safely just to have them ride past you again at a stop light (illegal) and have to pass them again.

I agree with your point, these bicyclist are arrogant pieces of shit. The evidence is fully displayed in this very thread.

This is partially true, but its also true that a biker who decides to bike down a major road during heavy traffic is willingly putting himself in danger.... Bikers can't just roll down a road and expect everyone to bow down and roll a carpet out for him. It's just that more hazards = greater chance of an accident to occur, and a biker on the road increases it greatly.

Packs are actually much safer for both parties. If there is a group of 20+ riders that you have to pass in single file, that's a lot more time that you may be out further in the lane.

This thread wasn't intended to argue who is at fault for bicycle accidents (drivers or bicyclists). It was to point out that the bicyclist must lack common sense to be riding around in traffic with huge cars in the first place.

If you ever get run over by a car on your bicycle while wearing your spandex pants that you defend so vehemently in your attempt to "go green" or be healthy I hope you will think about this thread.

I dont disagree that a bike rider should be atleast somewhat to the right, but dont expect them to tiptoe along the white stripe. IF a cyclist rides as far right as possible then just about everyone will attempt to squeeze between the cyclist and oncoming traffic, that is a fact!! Its also no suprise that this is how a lot of bike accidents happen. Riders should claim their area around them and force people into the other lane to pass.

i think its retarded that some of you expect cars to slow down and stay behind bikers without passing them. if you want to ride for recreation, do it on a less travelled road, some people have to be places.

i just love it when a group of 4-8 riders are all bunched up so that you cant even pass without illegally crossing the center double yellow line when they are supposed to ride single file as close to the right as possible.

its also illegal to NOT follow the rules of the road that cars must follow. i dont know how many times i see cyclist pedal through red lights or pedal up to front of the line again slowing down the entire lane of traffic from the light change.

riding on some of the busiest streets during a rush hour is a death wish.

IMO, there are way to many bad cyclists out there making bad names for those that actually ride responsibly

Um, it's clear that we're not talking about riding for recreation. There are bike trails for that. Have you never heard of destination bicyclists? Do you just assume street bicyclists are exercising or simply having fun?

hahaha, the cyclist i come across are NOT destination cyclists unless they are doing a superman change in a phone booth.

all the cyclist i EVER see are in their lance armstrong bike wear with no saddle bags or anything to carry a change of clothes in. these are just people out there for exercise fucking up traffic at 5:30 on cary parkway, maynard, trinity, edwards mill, etc etc etc.

the best are those cyclist on James Jackson though...i really hate those riders
