2) Does this mean you're back in Raleigh? Or were you gonna leave out the part about being in a totally different market?

That, too.

And she thinks people are jealous :carl:

Actually, some might be.
Ignorance is bliss, and she always makes a point to post about how happy she is.

Yeah, I quickly realized I had a job, a husband, a house, and a life...and decided against the whole Kiwi thing.

But for just a second, I was jealous.

At least we got a free tow out of it.

^ get a Haynes manual and get your husband or neighbor to do it.

^^ numbers are about correct. I had to replace the radiator fan motor on my Saturn last week. The shop quoted $81 for the part and $82 for the labor. Instead, I went to Advance Auto and got the part for $23 and replaced it myself in <30 minutes. You can save crazy money by learning how to use a ratchet set.

you unhook the battery, take the belt off, unplug the harness, and take out about 3 bolts

do that in reverse to put the new one on

Neither of you are interested in saving money? Or learning something new? Or capitalizing on a chance to make yourselves not look completely incompetent?

We are, but he's out of town for work and has meetings 12 hours a day, he doesn't have the convenience to work on it himself. Plus, the company said they'd comp him.

Still, that's a looooooot of money and if he were at home we'd have learned to fix it ourselves because I'd rather us not spend $400/hr on labor.

the first time i switched one out i was a complete noob
hell, still am

it took me about 2 hours but i did break my cheap ass socket wrench and had to go and buy a new set so i factored in that time it took to go out and back before the switch.

i was shocked at how simple it was and this was on a older celica

sounds like you're already resigned to sending it to the shop. why are you even asking this question. you're going to pay it anyway.

i've changed my alternator before and it was a pain in the ass. i'm sure some are easier than others, but it can't be that hard.

I think the "newer" ford engines are way compact. We can't even change the air filter because it's hidden under a bunch of shit. Though the manual says NOT to change it until 100,000 miles.

Just getting opinions, it's already a done deal hence it being in chit chat. When he told me the price I died a little inside, haha.

for the air filter ... this is ridiculous
Quote :
"There is no air filter to change in your vehicle. The air filter that is there, if it has not been changed is a lifetime filter. If you follow the air intake down from the engine you will notice a yellow/green contraption with a button. That's the flow tester. If you read in your owner's manual it will describe how you start the engine, then press the tester to see if you need to replace your lifetime air filter for $250 + labor from the dealer. Either that or you must remove the wheel, inner fenderwell, and unbolt the air box from the vehicle to remove it. Then replace the stock air filter with a $30 multi-size cone air filter from your local parts store. Look for threads entitled "Stealth CAI" for the Duratec engine- which is what you have in your car."

this how to switch out your alternator

Quote :
"I just pulled my alternator out of my 2.0 2005 ford focus. you have to remove it from the top. Removing the power steering fluid reservoir, Radiator reservoir, and the heat shield from the exhaust. Good luck. It wasn't fun. Also I am having a hard time finding a replacement under $250. "

holy christ that's a lot. I replaced one in my old car for $99 and a little sweat.

Go to LKQ in Garner, find your car, take an alternator from there, pay like $25 for it. Find some reasonably useful person and promise beer upon completion of alternator installation.

profit.
