nothing really. unless you consider having to remove the cab for any major service "special". i've just been impressed with my dad's 05 f350 in terms of power/performance. his has been very reliable so far too, but a lot of them aren't, especially early 04's. then, there's the better transmission, updated interior/exterior, built in brake controller, etc.

how the fuck would you service one in an excursion then?? 6/29/2009 11:21:05 PM |

same way, lift the body off. really not much more to it than a truck cab. few more body/frame bolts, tank filler, rear light harnesses. 6/29/2009 11:42:47 PM |

i concur.
it was funny to drive past the service department at crossroads or capital's truck center in late 04/early 05. there would always be 3-4 cabs hung up in the air on lifts. 6/30/2009 12:15:11 AM |

to hell with the cummins then i think ill just stick to a 7.3 ex 7/1/2009 5:33:29 PM |

unless you run across a really sweet deal, they're twice as much as the 6.8's and more than double the 5.4's. when i was looking for mine, i don't remember any non ragged to hell ones for less than ~12k. for that premium, you're not too far off a cummins swap, including labor. fwiw, chase quoted ~$8k out the door to put a 12v in that old suburban. doubt it'd be much difference for an excursion. you could probably even beat that sourcing the parts yourself.
if i was in the market for one for the sole purpose of doing a swap, i'd be looking for a 5.4. clean ones go for ~5k all day. less if you don't want/need 4wd or the limited package. consider that the drivetrain coming out is worth something too. 7/1/2009 8:52:53 PM |

im not gonna buy a 5000 truck and then throw an 8000 motor in it
anyhow i find that the 7.3 trucks seem to have been taken better care of for the most part, and coming from the escalade it will need to be in good shape 7/2/2009 4:58:13 AM |

Well dodge didnt have the balls to build a monster SUV with a cummins so its a moot point. Ive checked and a salv 12v lump is worth too much, factor in the install and the fact that the 7.3 really aint that bad- just buying a 7.3 excursion makes the most sense. 7/2/2009 4:24:40 PM |
