I'm taking this guy from out of the country to get a social security card for his stay tomorrow morning. Anyone know how long this usually takes?

When I got married I went with my then wife to the Social Security Office to get her name changed. We were there for the better part of the day. It's a miserable experience, almost as bad as sitting at the unemployment office.

How annoying/long/inefficient is it, on a scale of 1 to 10:
1 being you handing a dude money and him immediately handing you what you want
and
10 being how long it takes for a case to move through the US justice system

I'd say it's a solid 8, and that's assuming you have all the shit you actually need to get it done. And if I remember correctly, they don't just hand you the card right then and there. I think you have to come back for it a couple days later.

While that is generally the consensus of the Social Security office, I gotta say that when I went to get my new one after I got married, I got there at 2pm on Wednesday and was back in my car at 2:27pm. There were tons of people in there, but for some reason, my number got called way faster than theirs.

Same story for a good friend of mine. She was in the office less than 45mins for a name change.

They mail you your new card within 2 weeks. Mine came in like 4 business days though.

Isn't it kind of dangerous to send a social security card through the mail?
