is not nearly as uncommon as it needs to be:

Quote :
" Mississippi's still king of cellulite, but an ominous tide is rolling toward the Medicare doctors in neighboring Alabama: obese baby boomers.

It's time for the nation's annual obesity rankings and, outside of fairly lean Colorado, there's little good news. Obesity rates among adults rose in 23 states over the past year and didn't decline anywhere, says a new report from the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

And while the nation has long been bracing for a surge in Medicare as the boomers start turning 65, the new report makes clear that fat, not just age, will fuel much of those bills. In every state, the rate of obesity is higher among 55- to 64-year-olds — the oldest boomers — than among today's 65-and-beyond."

Colorado 18.9 / 51 / 0.4
Mississippi 32.5 / 1 / 0.8
North Carolina 28.3 / 12 / 1.2

Colorado (51st b/c the list includes DC) is the only state with an obesity rate below 20%. In every other state and the District of Columbia, one out of five people is overweight. A whopping 44.4% of Mississippi's children are overweight or obese.

I blame the food companies for pushing the production and sale of food that's too high in fats.

I blame the people for eating shitty food, but no the selection available doesn't help. Fat content or not, the ingestion of highly processed food allows the body to extract more calories from the food with less work than it has to perform with un-processed food. Since our stomachs aren't evolutionarily tuned to measuring this difference, we wind up extracting too many calories.

That and a lot of us are generally lazy and most of us spend practically no time thinking about what we actually ingest.

^ I'm not sure people choosing shitty food is primarily it, because this problem exists around the entire country. How can an entire country be so aloof or oblivious to their dietary practices? There has to be some overarching force pushing us this way, and the only such entity for this type of mass brainwashing is the media.

I know there are many times when I want something "healthy" but there are not really any restaurants that I can go on a lunch break to get good food. I especially hate too how corn syrup is in everything, even in foods that shouldn't really have much sugar at all (like chips or tomato sauce).

Pollan addresses that in The Omnivore's Dilemma and I don't disagree that the commercial food industry pours massive amounts of money into selling us the next best thing, which is really designed to maximize profit, and not to maximize health benefits.

Comma however.

When an American adult picks up a piece of food and puts it in their mouth, they're responsible for the gastronomical effects of that act. Period.

I'd support some solid lawsuits to challenge deliberately mislabeled advertising though.

^ no, fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, and eggs are usually more expensive than processed packaged junk/snack/fast food.

for $5-10, you can very easily get 2,000 calories from shit... try doing that from raw materials.

True. In the short run, there is little financial incentive to eat healthy. Since that is the biggest incentive in most people's lives, it goes to follow that we'll do cheap, easy, and unhealthy first.

Of course, the dysfunctional health care system offers little in the way of incentives to eat well and a government program would further reduce the perceived costs of poor eating habits.

Step one is ending the massive corn subsidies.

i wish everyone would take a nice step back away from blaming

a) the food companies
b) the media
c) your mother's uncle's baby momma's ex's best friend's dog's cousin twice removed

there are choices available if you look for them--do not tell me that they are too expensive. don't tell me that healthy options are not available. don't tell me that you don't have time. there are food stamps, cheap coops & farmer's markets, frozen produce, canned produce, growing your own food and time management.

yes, companies pay good money, lots of money, tons of money to sell particular products. they try to market to anyone and everyone who would potentially buy their shit, whether it is healthy or not, whether you are fat or not. you have the option of NOT BUYING WHAT THEY ARE SELLING.

take some responsibility people. educate yourselves and don't let the system work you.

Having fat kids means you're a bad mother.

I refuse to have children until I have lived and maintained a healthy lifestyle and weight, along with my husband, for at least two years. I do not want my children raised the way I was.

Perhaps you could release yourself into the wild to be stalked by a psychotic hunter. The ensuing chase would either help you lose weight, or end in your ultimate demise.

Either way, you win!

Make it a reality show and you'll be famous for no particular reason and have the cash (assuming you survive) to fund a personal trainer and dietitian.
