Looks like someone must have kicked over a nest just in the woods over there. I'm surprised more of 'em didn't swarm out with her. Must be another mound nearby.

It's the matriarch of the hive. They breed pretty much constantly throughout the mating season, becoming engorged with fertilized eggs that will eventually hatch inside the pouch.

The queen's birthing process is pretty fucking disgusting. The pups tear through this filmy layer of tissue in the sac, slither out through a flap of muscle, and climb up the queen's back, where they ride like baby spiders until their eyes open and fur starts growing in. A fully loaded queen looks like a roiling mass of little pink limbs. The sound is pretty fucking horrific.

Hi!

Still an awful mess out there this morning, arguably worse. We have some stray cats around here, and it looks like they got to most of the young. Big mama is just this practically untouched bulk of crushed meat and bone.

This sounds like the most gross thing ever. Also, is a pregnant possum really called a queen? I thought that was mostly an insect term.
