Honestly, if there are a lot of colors a shop would probably be better. The thread costs about 5-7 a pop for the machine my sister uses on top of maybe having to buy the correct software. Most people own alphabets, but some of the nonstandard stuff has to be purchased.

There is a place at Crabtree that did 2 shirts for me for 30 dollars.
