So I know this is [old] but I didn't see anything under search topics. I just received one of the new pennies and it freaked me out.

Why would you make a new penny design? Who the fuck uses pennies anyways?

Same reason they did the state quarters... only with these, no one will ever actually use the ones they find.

It doesn't make sense that we even still use pennies as currency

^^^and what was the reason for doing the quarters?

or the new buffalo nickles?

or the lewis and clark nickles?

or the dollar coins w/ the presidents?

it's all a useless waste of money imo

a few years ago they debated getting rid of the penny because it already costs more for us to make than it is worth.

a failed policy from what i can tell.

^its just a byproduct of the strong revisionist history movement. They're trying to inject quality into the art by using subjects that aren't appealing, or even recognizable, and that means they are more "realistic"

The stock market would explode if you did away with the penny. Thus causing serious inflation.

Which combination of coins would you prefer having?
a) a $0.1 coin, and a $0.5 coin
b) a $0.1 coin, a $0.2 coin, and a $0.4 coin
c) other______

Also, it wouldn't be a "cent" anymore, so what would we call each $0.1?
x) a dec (pronounced des) "I've got three dollars and 5 dec."
y) a dime "The soda machine requires 7 dimes."
z) other______

Not to mention, everything would sound weird:
"For 3 easy payments of nineteen nine!" ($19.9)
"Can you believe gasoline is four five a gallon?" ($4.5)
"Taco Bell has a new seven, eight, nine menu..." ($0.7, $0.8, $0.9)

crazyness...

$0.1 coin - dime, as is - 0.7in diameter, 1.35mm thick

$0.2 coin - between penny and nickle in size, slightly thinner than a quarter, no reeds, maybe put a hole in it - 0.8in diameter, 1.65mm thick

$0.5 coin - slightly smaller and thicker than a quarter, (thickness of a nickle), reeds - 0.9in diameter, 1.95 mm thick

Put Washington on the dollar coin, Lincoln on the 0.5, Jefferson on the 0.2. Kennedy and Sacagawea get the shaft.

how do y'all feel about dollar coins? i wish they were more widely used.

i like them. wouldn't be stuffing my wallet with a bunch of $1 bills. also would make vending machines easier.

^ I actually think a $5 coin might be useful, maybe more so than a $1. One or two of em and you can cover most small/lunch purchases.

If my wallet was just ones and large bills, and I had a few $5 coins, that seems ideal.

I hate $Dollar coins. They make a little more sense yes especially at a bar where you could plop down a couple for beer and tip, but i hate carrying change in my pocket.

That's the only thing i dislike when i go to Canada, 3 hours of being there and i have a pocket full of 10+ Loonies and Toonies. And the constant jingle jangle irks me.

the mint sells coinage at face value and gets to pocket the difference between cost and valuation

paper currency, on the other hand, is sold at cost

the more coins get pulled out of circulation by collectors, the more coins they get to sell

Quote :
"Quarter revenues have increased from an average of $403 million for the three years prior to the inception of the “50State Quarters Program” (FY 1996 – FY1998) to an average of $1,205 million for the past two fiscal years. This represents an average increase of 199%. The dramatic increase in quarter revenues is a result of the phenomenally successful 50 State Quarters Program. It is estimated that nearly 113 million citizens are actively collecting the 50 state quarters. Under this program a new state quarter is produced every ten weeks."

1, 2 and 5?.... yeah, I could see that. That would have the same ratios as nickel-dime-quarter

Also, I second the coin hole.
