ASHINGTON (AP) ?"The Senate struck a historic blow against smoking in America Thursday, voting overwhelmingly to give regulators new power to limit nicotine in the cigarettes that kill nearly a half-million people a year, to drastically curtail ads that glorify tobacco and to ban flavored products aimed at spreading the habit to young people.President Barack Obama, who has spoken of his own struggle to quit smoking, said he was eager to sign the legislation, and the House planned a vote for Friday. Cigarette foes said the measure would not only cut deaths but reduce the $100 billion in annual health care costs linked to tobacco."

at first i was shocked by the more in prison than in college statistic, but then again college is typically for those 18 - 22 and prison covers a much larger range. not too surprising i guess.

^^^agreed. you know WN, we've butted heads quite a bit, but I've read through many of your ramblings lately, and I must admit, I have agreed with a vast majority of them... [Edited on July 9, 2009 at 9:29 AM. Reason : ^yeh. no one has a right to it. it's a commidity/service. you need it, you pay for it]
7/9/2009 9:29:08 AM
people don't want to take responsibility for their own actions.
7/9/2009 9:30:24 AM
^^^Yes, really. I feel sorry for you if you disagree. Health care is a service. If you can't afford it, you have no right to steal money from others to pay for it. A large part of society may contend that we all, or at least they, have a moral obligation to not allow others to die from treatable illness, but that is not the same as the individual needing the treatment having a right to that treatment. Private-sources of money should be the sole fund for giving "free" health care to others. Stealing money from everyone to pay for what is very likely the fault of someone else's behavior is 100% inescapably wrong. Period.
7/9/2009 9:33:17 AM
honestly everyone needs to get off the "i need to get as much status, power, money as i can and be better than everyone else around me" attitude and as a whole, all 6 or so billion of us, work together towards furthering ourselves as a species, the resources we waste killing each other, or having excess everything could be put to a much better use.

Does that statement mean that the US spends 100 billion a year in tobacco related healthcare, or that the privatized healthcare system does? Because if the US government is being forced to dish out 100 billion a year because of the stuff, I think it is a little reasonable to try to stop people from using it.

who cares? this is just a troll thread. motherfucker didn't even include a link.
7/9/2009 2:10:19 PM
^^That's the idea. By socializing health care, the government would gain a reason to dictate that we be healthy -- namely money. This, of course, is complete bullshit. No one should have to pay one penny for someone else's decisions. This anti-smoking crap, and socialized health care in general (read: public option,) is just one of the important first steps towards the destruction of private property, the concept of the individual, and personal responsibility. The worst thing about this nanny-statism, is how it appears to some to be such a virtuous goal. People being healthier is good, right? Sure... but forcing them to be healthy is not.

my great-grandmother lived to be 83 and she smoked 2 packs of winstons everyday for a long time.smoking is

just a jab at the segment of people whose primary reason for wanting smoking banned is so they can be free to go out and get liquored up at any bar without their hair and clothes smelling like smoke]
7/9/2009 4:41:29 PM
It's not that we have to go to bars to get wasted, it's that going to bars is the only (most likely) way for us to pick up random sluts in the process....And we don't want our clothes smelling like smoke
7/9/2009 4:54:33 PM
either wayif you admit it, its all good...i just get annoyed with the people who argue that its strictly for their health! because those people are SO CONCERNED about their health, they're willing to subject themselves to alcohol and smoky bars in the first place
7/9/2009 4:57:33 PM
7/9/2009 5:00:09 PM
Well, it WOULD obviously be more healthy if there was no smoke around. booze + smoke is less healthy for you than just booze
7/9/2009 5:02:30 PM
i dont disagree with that one bit, but again i'm directing those jabs at the people who act like they're so concerned about health, yet they're already willing to go out and subject themselves to smoky barsIf you were REALLY worried about your health, wouldn't you only go to non-smoking bars and restaurants?anyway, this topic has been hashed out ad nauseum on TWW, i don't know of any new info to add

I think we should just let people who smoke and get sick die painful, horrifying deaths. No compassion, no mercy. They lie in the bed they've made for themselves. We use the rest of the money on national stimulus packages - WAIT NO! I meant... uh... better NC Roads? No, that's not it... Raise for congress?...
