I bought my jeep from my parents 4 or 5 years ago but never actually did any transfer on it. Now I want to officially get the title in my name but i'm not sure how I should go about it. I need the tag to be in SC to avoid having to get inspections (I can do this because i'm stationed in SC). I'm going to keep the insurance in NC. Do I need to transfer the title to SC to get the tag or can I keep it in NC?

you need to have a current address for at least 6 months. I dont know how stationing works, but if your addy is in sc and you have had it for that long than, youre all set. i havent done an outof state title in a while though

I was told by the people on base when I first got here that you don't necessarily have to have them all in the same state. I already have a policy on my truck in NC that I would just add the jeep to.

^active duty military doesn't have to have 6 months, just show them my orders and i'm good to go.

I'm hoping I can get around that. One because my truck will still have NC tags and two insurance is a lot more expensive in SC, even with the on base discount.

Actually I still have insurance tied to me living in the fraternity house which is cheaper than living on base in SC and living at home in charlotte

Sounds like you're setting yourself up for some headaches if you ever try to collect on that insurance. It's a Jeep that's at least 5 years old...Insurance can't be that much no matter where you are.

I don't care about the jeep, I don't even really want insurance on it considering I rarely ever drive it on the road. She's my offroad queen.

The big deal is the truck. I drive a diesel F250.

That's funny, I keep typing titties instead of titles.

Make sure when you actually exchange ownership at the DMV that your parents tell them they "gifted" the car to you. If the care value is under a certain price then you will not have to pay a "gift tax".

North Carolina will only allow you to insure cars registered in North Carolina. I tired to do the same thing when I was in Texas. Insurance in South Carolina cost about the same as it does in North Carolina I think so you might be better off keeping ever thing in South Carolina

Sweet, so i'd have to transfer the title and tag to SC and not only pay for that but lose the $100 I just paid for my NC tag.

I think i'm going to just sit down with my insurance agent tomorrow and figure it out.

iirc. you can transfer the title and not have to regi your car. i did this about 5 years ago when i bought a project bike, i put it in my name but didnt regi it. i just got the title in my name and paid the fees for a title transfer. Idk man maybe im just confusing you

I'm not reading all this crap.

1) Do you currently live in NC or SC?

2) Do your parents currently live in NC or SC?

3) Why do you need to have SC tags?

1) Permanent address is NC, currently stationed in SC

2) Parents live in NC, jeep title is in NC

3) Jeep will not pass NC inspection, SC has no inspection. I have no interest in making my jeep able to pass inspection as it is a four wheeling only rig now.
