WTF? Last night we went to see this at midnight and there was a sign about some NC Statute law that forbade them from serving alcohol at the viewing of this movie. Anyone have any insight?

They've been raising prices lately, but I think $4.50 for a small and $6 for a large.. something like that.

It's not a purse! It's a satchel!

the statute was about like nudity etc in movies. i dunno. i didn't really get the full scoop though i tried inquiring about it. not like trying to fight just trying to understand. looked up the statute when i got home.

depends on if you get a small or large. i think they are ~5.25 or something (i usually get the large).

Ye olde satchel can carry tons of rapies. Perfect for the movie date!

I'm going to see it again tonight and will most definitely be bringing in some liquor. Just wanted to know why they can't serve beer? Is it so the audience doesn't throw up when they see the horrific shots of penis?

What about if you go to see another movie? Are you cut off as well? If I can't drink beer and watch a movie there's no reason to go to Mission Valley.

I worked at Mission Valley back in 1997. That was before they had beer. I missed out.

If I had to guess it had to do with the full frontal nudity in the movie.

i don't think you are cut off from other movies. it was something about the owner disagreeing with the nudity in the film and some statute. i don't know. it is what the ticket chick at the door said. ask when you go back tonight and get the full scoop. i was kinda tipsy when i walked in last night so i wasn't paying attention to the explanation she gave.

yikes you are seeing it again? barf.

i know right. when i looked up the statute i didn't really get how the two went together. the statute was about nudity. didn't really get the alcohol part. unless i looked up the wrong statute. which is also possible.

also i feel like when i saw borat there the owner came out and like made an announcement about beer and kegs and blah blah blah before the show. i dunno. you'd think peeps would want the extra revenue. but what do i know.

I'd have no moral problem with that. That's the owner's decision.

You feel like it? How drunk were you? Did the owner come out and lecture everyone or not?
If so, that is pretty fucked up -- but still their decision.

^^ no i mean like i THINK it was borat. i don't know it might have been a jackass movie but i'm pretty sure it was borat. and what i MEANT was he came out and was like "we have 22 kegs of beer flowing so drink up" or something to that effect. so i was kind of surprised last night.

to summarize: it was some movie with nudity/other ish that i saw there a few years ago that the owner was like happy it was sold out and everyone was drankin

AND all i'm saying is that i don't care - sure it is their decision but i feel like i was tricked. went to buy tickets yesterday afternoon around 330 or 4 and nooooo signs up about alcohol. then when we show up there for the movie, signs are up: no alcohol. which obviously they had to do because like people have said before, beer is a big reason why people choose to go to MV - i'm sure some people would have been dissuaded from buying tickets had they known the alcohol policy prior to purchase. it was just kind of tricksy.

The basic deal is that North Carolina has some antiquated, poorly defined law banning the sale of alcohol in "pornographic" theaters. I believe this culminated in RPD seizing a print from the Rialto in the 80's, which is why they wouldn't show Shortbus. Something along those lines.

That being said, just don't tell the concessions people you're there for Bruno, or sneak something in.

last night wouldn't have been an option though... it was a midnight showing (only movie they were showing at the time)

i'm glad i didn't go see it last night- now i know to make arrangments before hand. it looks like it will be a "go buy a flask and then buy a large soda at the theater" movie... that's what I used to do anyway- one time I spilled my drink right when i walked in (before I mixed it) so I drank the whole pint by itself in the first 20 minutes of the movie... I don't remember that movie at all (I think it was jackass 2)

I saw Borat there (twice) and drank each time. There was definitely no prevention of me drinking, and that movie definitely had full-frontal nudity.

I was there last night to watch the hangover, and I saw them debating about the sale of alcohol for the midnight showing.

Well, Borat had censorship bars, so there technically wasn't nudity.

My inside source at MV says that the owner had a private screening with some friends. They had some drinks, and he got outraged, saying, "It's too lewd! We can't serve beer for this."

Apparently, they are serving beer for Brüno for now after an argument with the general manager about the lost beer sales. But who knows how long that will last?

i've never seen any college student get drunk from beers at a movie theater.

i have seen older folks get drunk off wine at galaxy/madstone before.

I occasionally do want to get drunk at a movie--like at the Blue Ridge--but I can concur with sarijoul. I've worked at theaters serving beer for over five years, and I can only remember one instance of a drunk person under 40 (which wasn't even from our stuff--two guys who barely spoke English came in shitfaced and called 911 on us when I wouldn't serve them beer). Old people drink WAY more at the movies. Old ladies go through glasses of wine like you wouldn't believe.

Ah.

SC (where I live) does have that law, and I thought I remembered that NC had it, but I guess not.
