what do you mean now? they haven't changed the formula for frontline and you've never needed a prescription. you need one for revolution b/c it controls heartworms too.

dont need a script for flea/tick med, can buy OTC anywhere.

a heatworm preventative requires proof that a heartworm test was done recently. you can order off petmeds, or some other place, and provide them the phone # for your vet so they can verify that a heartworm test was done in the last X months. if u haven't had one, then good luck.

I use canadavet.com because it's less expensive. I don't think they require a script.

Oh, and I get heartguard, a heartworm preventative.

^ i just checked them and they're only $1 cheaper on the hearguard my dog takes 51-100but if they dont require a script then i guess thats good for some people...

is there a danger of giving the stuff if they already have heartworms? why do they require a script?

they won't give you one without a heartworm test. the company will pay for treatment if your animal gets heartworm while on the drug. for the guarantee, you have to purchase it from a vet or a company in the US. A vet is a safer bet, local vets will sometimes match prices w/ shipping.

My vet recommended Iverheart (sp?) for my dog. It is cheaper than all the rest, plus guards against hookworms and some other shit. I think I paid $35 for a 6 month supply, and that was actually AT my vet's office.

Interceptor can kill a dog with heartworms, kills of the microfilaria off quickly. Ivermectin kills them off more slowly and is ok to give to HW+ animals. I get OTC ivermectin to give to my cat. Slightly annoying because I have to buy enough to treat 50 cats, but still cheaper than getting it from the vet. My parents split the cost with me so it's very reasonable if you have multiple pets.

Please don't advocate the use of giving OTC ivermectin to animals. The common pet owner should not be trusted with calculating the proper dose.

I never said anyone else should, just that I do. It is labeled for animals, they just happen to be cattle. My parents won't pay for a heartworm test for their cat, so if I don't do this he doesn't get heartworm prevention. It has to be diluted way down and it's still only a tiny dose, but it works and at least my parents cat get some health care. My mother has nothing to do all day and still hasn't gotten around to giving the cat the joint supplements she had me research and buy him.

yeah, i was about to post petshed.com as well...a 6-month supply of ivermectin generic (same as heartgard) is only $17 (25-50lb dogs) and then $5 shipping (i think)...$23 shipped is a pretty good deal

heartgard is $39 shipped for the same size/amount

when you consider that frontline plus is about $10/treatment and revolution (heartworm meds and flea/tick) is $82 shipped for a 6-month supply, you come out about even if you were to buy the ivermectin generic and frontline separately, but you're only using one pill (i can't speak to how well it works, though, since i've never using anything but the ivermectin/frontline combo)
