My first job was at a shitty grocery store back home called Food King. I was 14, and it was miserable. I made youth minimum wage, $4.25 an hour. I would get off the school bus at the store and work until close.

Fun memories from Food King:

I worked with one of the cool older kids from my high school named Jeremy Hinton. He was friendly to everyone, but real mysterious and didn't hang out with anyone I knew. He was honestly kind of a jackleg figure. He and I were all buddy-buddy at work, and he would recount episodes of South Park for me since I didn't have cable.

I also worked with my friend Julian. Whenever our manager Gloria gave us hell, we'd slip over to the sugar aisle, slit a bag of sugar open with our box cutters, and hide it on the bottom. Ju also taught me the sacred art of scamming free food off the damaged goods cart (and creating food that would end up on the damaged goods cart).

I also enjoyed hiding Dr. Peppers in the shopping carts at the start of my shift so I could walk out with a free drink after close. Beautiful.
