The woman that sat behind me the other night when we saw "The Hangover".

She was answering and talking to people on her damn cellphone - those are the sounds I hate.

shotguns racking when they're shooting handguns, or visa versa.

I thought this tread was going to be about the Wilhelm scream.

Anyway... amplified keyboard/mouse sounds. This goes more for commercials though.

^^There was an episode of the new Knight Rider where a kid was playing a video game (no name given, but obviously Halo) and it sounded more like Pac-Man.

I dont know if I necessarily hate this, but I hear sound effects from Doom used in a lot of movies and tv shows.

Yeah, I don't like it when they've got the crappy generic video games sounds either. They think the only noises people associate with video games are cheesy beeps and boops, even today? The director/sound people for those movies must be older than my parents. God help these people if they watched somebody play ArmA 2.

As for other movie sounds I hate proper, well, it would probably have to be just about all the ones that aren't supposed to be there. There's so many sound bites that they just reuse and reuse in so many movies. Examples being:

- Dogs whining when the dog is clearly just sitting there.
- Cheesy woman's screams from a woman who obviously isn't making said noise.
- Cheesy fake baby noises.
- The millions of extra clicking noises pistols can apparently make, even revolvers, when the hammer is cocked (oops, I picked the sound bite for the 9mm automatic, oh well nobody will notice).
- The sound that data makes when flying through the tubes on the internet.
- That same broken-down car sound that every car in every movie makes when it runs out of gas.
- The sounds that animals apparently make (dogs get a separate mention because I hate that violation enough that it warrants its own listing).

I mean... Basically I just hate it when they try to insert sounds in movies in regular scenes (i.e. no CGI) where the people/things in the scene can make the sound they're throwing in there just fine. They do such a shit ass job of providing replacement noises that they just shouldn't bother.

I hate how people repeatedly cock shotguns and/or pistols as some sort of threat. makes no sense, you would just lose shells/bullets

ALARM
CLOCK

Boycott any asshole company who uses an alarm clock sound in their commercials plz.

Oh yeah, and your company is an asshole if they have radio ads that include the sound of a car horn or a car accident. I know it grabs drivers' attention. Doesn't mean it's not an asshole thing to do.

That "swhooopsh" sound 5 seconds into ATLiens (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxL13M9fWIY) has been in a million movies, and it always annoys the hell out of me. It's apparently the sound that portals make.

Does anyone have any idea what its origin is? I don't know where it first appeared but it seems more common to me than the Wilhelm scream these days.

Also, the woman's scream sample at 30 seconds here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBYSgPoBeuE is also incredibly overused and annoys me. What movie did it originate from?

^^^ That sound was in DOOM II ! I remember it from the last level where the demon head thing is throwing fire balls at you. I hear it EVERYWHERE.

^ Doom sounds seem to show up all the time! I've heard a couple of the IMP / Demon sounds in movies... as well as a couple of the more awful screams.

Definitely find myself frantically looking around every time I hear one to see if anybody else noticed / recognized.

I second the comment about certain sounds in radio ads. I hate it when commercials or songs use emergency siren sounds, they always make me think an ambulance or police car is coming. The last few seconds of "Shut up and drive" would throw me off every time.

I also dislike when a cell phone rings in a movie, it makes me think some asshole in the audience forgot to silence his phone. I also hate when a cell phone ringer in a movie or TV show is exactly the same as mine.

The generic alarm clock buzz makes me cringe in movies because one of my old roommates had an alarm clock with the same sound and always got up at ridiculously early hours of the morning.

The reason you hear a lot of the same sounds over and over again is that they're public domain sounds. So no royalties or foley work. The Wilhelm scream and Castle Thunder are classics that often get used as kind of an in-joke or nod to the past in movies (more a joke for Castle Thunder, and more a nod in the case of Wilhems). There's also that other scream you hear a lot, that's not quite like the Wilhem, but is a strong sucking sound. It's the sound the thin, jumping zombies make in Half-Life 2, and I specifically remember it from a commercial for a special forces group or the Marines or some such.

Other sounds you hear repeatedly both in video games and TV/Film are the aforementioned swoosh sound and the elevator sound from Quake.

Interesting sidenote: any vocally created sounds on a SAG production fall under voice acting rules. I know this, because a friend of mine works at a video game company, and had an idea for employees or friends to record some special sound effects (I won't say why -- it was a great, and very original idea). But since their last couple of big games had SAG actors, they would have had to have paid SAG wages to the people who recorded the sounds.
