on a tandom axle, each pair is considered "a" wheel, it's based on live axle ends, not number of actual wheels, know your role son

Quote :
"Six-wheel drive, 6WD or 6x6 is a drivetrain configuration of six wheels, all of which are driven simultaneously by the vehicle's engine. Unlike four-wheel drive drivetrains, the configuration is largely confined to off-road and military vehicles, particularly heavy-duty ones. Six-wheel drive vehicles may have two wheels at the front and four at the rear (with only the front pair steering), or three evenly spaced axles, where the front and middle pair may both steer (as in the Alvis Saladin). Drive may be limited to the rear two axles for on-road use.

The M35 2-1/2 ton cargo truck (aka "Deuce and a half") and the Pinzgauer High Mobility All-Terrain Vehicle are production examples of vehicles using this type of drive system."

and wikipedia says I'm right too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_wheel

Quote :
"A drive wheel is a roadwheel in an automotive vehicle that receives torque from the powertrain, and provides the final driving force for a vehicle. A two-wheel drive vehicle has two driven wheels, and a four-wheel drive has four, and so-on.

"

[Edited on July 19, 2009 at 2:08 AM. Reason : the pinzgauer and the original duece and a halfs only had 6 wheels.]

So i guess every manufacturer of 1 ton 4wd duallys for the last 60 years needs to go back and call them 6x6's instead of 4x4's?

I concur with 69. It's a 6x6, as it has 6 axle ends. Just as he pointed out in ^^^^, that is a 4x4, not a 6x6.
