new show I keep seeing advertised on the Discovery channel and it's only been in commercials for the past week or so it seems like. It is about owning a fucking pawn shop, lol.

But anyway, in one of the commercials I saw yesterday the pawn shop owner claimed that this clock he was holding was plated with gold or some shit. The thing is, he said that in order to plate it the gold had been mixed with mercury and then this liquid was applied to the outer part of the clock (I guess you'd call it the "housing"?). Then the clock was baked in an oven, which vaporized off the mercury. Well, he claimed that this was done in a non-ventilated room and as a result it "killed whoever made this clock."

He was like, "There's no tellin' how many people got killed making this clock. It's worth $10k son."

So, what in the fuck is up with this? Did ancient clock making peoples think that whoever made a clock was struck down by the hammer of thor? I mean I guess that's what they figured was killing the people whose job it was to bake off the mercury. Maybe they would do it with the agreement that the money would go to their family? It's like, "Thor is going to kill you for doing this my son, but I will pay your family in full son. Just go in there and bake off this mercury son." Perhaps this whole thing is an exaggeration or maybe, you know, a steaming pile of bullshit?

Anyway, I figured maybe I should look it up on google, but then I was like, "NAW SON, I'D RATHER GO ON THIS JOURNEY AND/OR PROCESS OF DISCOVERY WITH THE OTHER PEOPLE ON TWW BECAUSE THAT IS MUCH MORE INSANE THAN JUST LOOKING AT IT ON GOOGLE SON."

There have been ancient Chinese tombs found with pools of mercury in order to poison the environment and keep tomb raiders out. I'm guessing that the toxicity of mercury would have already been known.

I would think that gold would have been applied from an aqueous solution with electroplating or would have been laid foil.

That is my thought as well, so it makes no real sense why anyone would sit in a room full of mercury vapor (Especially after EVERY OTHER PERSON TO DO SO HAS FUCKING DIED... ). Also note that when I said that thing about "ancient peoples" I was kidding around.

Exactly my thoughts as well, which is one reason I really wondered if it was complete BS. But again, maybe it was not gold and I am remembering that part wrong. The clock looked pretty golden though, so I think it was gold that he was mentioning being mixed with the mercury. It doesn't really make any sense to do this though IMO (But people are retarded and people a couple hundred years ago we were even less informed)....

Well, if it weren't for the fact that it's on a channel that at least attempts to be scientific in the programming it provides (There are a few complete failures in there ) I'd have said the same thing. It's a fucking retarded pawn shop owner! Thing is, this shop supposedly pawns retardedly expensive items. On one other commercial they show the owner with some sword that he claimed would be worth $30k after he repaired it. But anyway, that shit got me thinking either he's wrong (Confused or full of shit) or he's correct and I want to know which one. I also want to know where in the fuck he got that ridiculous story if it is bullshit...

Somebody google this shit son.

"The process of fire gilding involves the application of a gold and mercury amalgam to a cleaned copper or silver alloy surface. The surface is heated until most of the mercury volatilizes, leaving a metallically bonded gold layer. Fire gilding was very popular in France in the 18th century and early 19th century where it was valued for its appearance and durability."

So, the next step is to find out why it is that the pawn shop owner claims everyone who fire gilds a clock dies from it.

Here is a bit of information, but I still don't see how he knows for sure that people died making the clock....

Quote :
"This method of gilding metallic objects was formerly widespread, but fell into disuse as the dangers of mercury toxicity became known. Since fire-gilding requires that the mercury be volatilized to drive off the mercury and leave the gold behind on the surface, it is extremely dangerous. Breathing the fumes generated by this process can quickly result in serious health problems, such as neurological damage and endocrine disorders, since inhalation is a very efficient route for mercuric compounds to enter the body."

i don't see any reason to doubt his story. pawn shops are respected worldwide for their reputable fair trade business practices and renowned research that goes into every artifact that comes through the door.

I too, would like to know why Thor used his god-hammer to smite simple clockmakers.

I love pawn shops. Taking advantage of other people's misfortune to get cheap shit is great. It's especially great when you live near a military base.

maybe he means that they died eventually from complications resulting from being a clockmaker

like, maybe he managed to make fifteen or twenty of them before kicking the bucket, but ultimately it was the clockmaking that did him in

Well, he says something about "there's no telling how many people died making this", so I don't think he was saying that one person made it and later died.

After completing their dissertations and spending a number of years in academia a lot of experts on ancient smelting methods go on to run pawn shops. You should definitely trust their opinion more than any idiot off the street.

The mercury was put in the tomb because the ancient chinese thought that it was baller as fuck, not because it was poisonous.
