Why, EMCE, do you also happen to live next to a beautiful waterfront area?

Ah, K. I'm guessing upstate new york doesn't offer much in the way of waterfront views, then.

I'm going to have a hard time moving away from the water given where I live now. Being able to just walk out of my apartment and see shit like that (what you have above) is just so damn awesome.

ha, yeah...

we have a lot of beautiful lakes, scenery, etc...

Ithaca truly is GORGES

but not too much in terms of ocean front. but yeah man, you're right. I got so used to being able to wake up on a saturday, grab some fishing poles, and camp out at the beach for the day...
sheeeeit....
bring a grill, football, chairs, and stop by the grocery store on your way out...

on the plus side:

Boston - 5 hours away
NYC - 3 hours away
Albany - 1.5 hours away
Syracuse - like 2.5 hours away
Philly - 3 hours away

Those are positives?

j/k

I'm still not entirely settled here yet. Spending most of my afternoons inside (this afternoon was spent electing all my federal benefits) and really only going out to get necessities.

It won't be til some time in the middle of next week or later before I finally decide to go out and ENJOY something here, haha. Still don't get paid til the first week in august.

[Edited on July 23, 2009 at 8:22 PM. Reason : Either way, I think both areas mentioned here are cooler than Raleigh.]

Portsmouth. I wanted to live near the shipyard because that's where I work. 1.4 mile commute to work ftw.

Once you weigh the cost of travel into the equation (and the fact that water and hot water are included with rent here), living in this place in downtown portsmouth is $cheap.

Ahh, good deal.
Hey man, watch out in portsmouth. there are a few rough areas in that city. misguided people that are really territorial about their "hood".

other than that, when you make it through the tunnel and end up in norfolk, you need to check out:

-Mochimo burrito bar on brambleton
-Baxter's on Granby street
-Granby theatre on Granby (some club that changes names often)
-21st street deli on 21st street (not as good as it used to be, but overall great food)
-New Belmont on 21st street
-The Taphouse in Ghent

Yeah, I know of these aforementioned areas. I have zero interest in going to any of the residential areas of portsmouth outside of where I am right now. Basically, everywhere south of 264 I will avoid because there's nothing there for me. The shopping centers just west of downtown seem OK, despite the fact that people on some other forums (namely city-data.com) seem to believe that black people = oh my god I'm going to get mugged while buying groceries.

Seriously, the fresh market at the victory crossing shopping center is absolutely amazing, and during the daytime stuff around here seems to be just fine. I just don't plan on dicking around here at night (except maybe in my immediate area, and then mostly in groups).

I'm looking at trying to get some folks more interested in going out to downtown norfolk (via the ferry) at some point. What I really want to do is to see if we can't do some sort of party or something on the spirit of norfolk and just have everybody contribute their cost into it and spend a friday night cruising on the water eating dinner, enjoying the music, etc. Trying to get people to go for the slightly classier entertainment instead of finding a bunch of people that wanna go sit in a bar for three hours every night (since being in cig smoke can leave me sick for a couple days).

One thing I think is TOTALLY bad ass is the number of cultural events that happen around here. They're all real close to where I am now as well.

Also as far as this goes:

Quote :
"misguided people that are really territorial about their "hood"."

Yeah, the gang crime I've seen mentioned sounds far from pleasant. There's even "gang crime" where I live right now, if you count spoiled misguided white kids spraypainting white supremacist graffiti in a parking deck as a bad sign. I reported that to the police the other day, and I'm hoping they can paint over that.

Hopefully they'll get a decent middle-class condominium tower built in portsmouth sometime in the coming years so I can put roots down somewhere and build equity within driving distance to work without having to spend $300,000 on a drafty old-ass house. If they don't do something like that, I'm just gonna rent and not move elsewhere for a while. I mean, shit, this place is perfect and right now I've got my finances set up so I can retire quite happily based on my TSP alone. There are some condos across the street I'd consider living in, but they look borderline crappy (I'd like a newer place like the tower I'm in now).

oh man, if you like culture, that whole area is a goldmine

there are so many beach concerts during the summer
plenty of museums
just about every type of food (authentic) you can imagine
tons of big names roll through The Norva
etc..

Oh yeah, be sure to check out MacArthur on ice during the winter. they rope off a section of downtown norfolk, ice it over, and turn it into a skating rink

but like you said...just use common sense and stay out of places that you think might be dangerous...as they probably are
also, watch out for people that might be watching you. there are people that will spend the time to watch you, figure out your schedule, then rob your apartment blind when you're gone for 45 minutes.

Luckily I'm in a controlled access building in an area where cops roll by every 10 minutes (if not every 3 minutes). To figure out where I am they would have to ride up with me and follow me to my door, and nobody seems to have the guts to mess with this building in such a way just yet. They've never had such an incident here so I'll probably be fine, but I'll keep that in mind if I ever get something a little more firmly rooted on the ground.

That's actually a huge reason that I picked this place. Can't get inside the outer doors after like 7-8pm without an RFID tag.

[Edited on July 23, 2009 at 9:23 PM. Reason : I'm spending $fuck/mo on this place. Enough to cover a starter home's mortgage payments in Raleigh.]

yeah...
if I had only known...

I would have spent the extra $150 a month for an apartment in The Hague (runs anywhere from $1000-$1500/mo) for a security patrolled tower in Ghent on the river

would have saved me a big headache...

Yeah. Being a Cary boy I'm paranoid as shit, but lucky for me this place also makes sound financial sense so I'm not just giving into my paranoia.
