i'll be the first to admit in this thread that i literally didnt know the guy that arrested the other guy was named "jim crow"
7/25/2009 9:18:58 PM
i have yet to post in any of the gates arrest threads but my opinion is that this event was less about race and more about the abuse in general of cops and issuing disorderly conduct charges. i agree that cops have a dangerous job and they should have some authority to protect themselves in situations with uncooperative and unruly citizens. i think too often cops (both good and bad cops) use that mechanism excessively. and i think it's a shame that the discussion has revolved around race here and not police methods in general.
7/25/2009 9:21:48 PM
^ that and the fact that the letter of the law in terms of 'disorderly conduct' is so broad, and vaguely defined, that it's just too easy for any police officer to say you were being disorderly, and therefore in the wrong. While in some cases, people ARE acting disorderly, in this particular case 'disorderly conduct' was basically used to say "I'm a cop, and you can't talk back to me...you can't say anything to me that I don't want you to say"wherein the United States of Americathere is this little thing calledfreedom of speech
7/25/2009 9:26:34 PM
i just know this is gonna play out like some scene in Crash where Mr. Crow is gonna end up saving Gates' cat down a well or something
