Anyone else think it looks good?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQbmFAE5WI

I'm sure this rapes the character and spirit of Doyle's character, but since I haven't read the book I'm looking forward to it.

Seems like a fun movie with plenty of action and a good enough story, similar to Iron Man (which was my favorite summer movie last year, screw TDK).

very excited for this. I think it will be a good spin on a classic character.

i don't think it rapes the character, Holmes was arrogant and brash in a way that Robert Downey Jr does better than anyone else.

EDIT: Recant. The commercial I saw the other day made the movie look like a Michael Bay production.

Directed by Guy Ritchie who has fallen off of late but redeemed himself with Rocknrolla IMO.

Just remember when you see this:

The character of Sherlock Holmes was a boxer, a drug addict, an arrogant prick, an expert in Canne de combat, and always up for a good chase scene in order to set up his quarry.

Frankly, I don't think they'd have to stretch too much to make a decent action movie out of it. I'm sure they'll stretch here and there, and will probably ignore the whole cocaine usage problem, but all-in-all I don't think they'll really be able to destroy the character.

just saw the trailer for this, it looks fun.

20 bucks says it turns into the next pirates franchise, sans johnny depp.

83% Fresh although it's with only 12 reviews. So far it's in the "decent way to kill 2 hours" group, and if it holds that I think it'd beat a lot of people's expectations.

I dunno I just don't think of Holmes as an action character, and there are way too many explosions in the previews to ease my doubts .

But if you go back to the books early then you kinda get the feeling that Holmes WAS an action character (or at least as close as you could get to one around 1900).

It's been all the reimagining of the character since that time that've been the dour, almost wimpy versions of Holmes.

I'm just concerned about too much Charlie's Angels-style ass-kicking and effects overpowering the plot and the acting.

The trailer I saw for this months ago made it look like a much darker serious movie than the trailers I am currently seeing on TV.

I'm stoked for this movie. The previews look pretty good so far (to me). In the stories Holmes was all but devoid of emotion, very logic-centric, and that's what made him so interesting. So far the character in the previews seems to be a dead-pan badass, which is what I'm hoping they carry throughout.

it wasn't explicitly coke in the movie, but he did use drugs. I doubt in today's society they could get away with coke...

even though it is RDJR hahahaha

[Edited on December 26, 2009 at 11:35 AM. Reason : better than any of the old Holmes films by a far sight]

This movie was really good. Jude Law/Downey make the movie themselves.

I'm convinced Downey can make any movie worth watching now after this and Tropic Thunder which was a disaster outside of him.

^^Well, they didn't just come out and say he was doing coke, but at one in the movie he's obviously on some kind of stimulant and Watson says "the stuff you were drinking is meant for eye surgery." So, yeah.

^Tropic Thunder was hilarious, I don't know what you're talking about.

I cant believe how many of you are watching this, the trailers looked HORRIBLE, like a Van Damme movie or something... I might have to give it a chance but it looked really really bad, like Van Helsing bad

people at the theater keep saying "it's very intelligent, I couldn't follow it." "The writing was great, dialogue was so... intelligent."

This worries me. It's probably bad and faux-intelligent.

Mr. Rush... i need to know some of your opinions on past movies to see if I should value your opinion.

For the following, tell me: great, good, tolerable, bad, god awful

Transformers
Van Helsing
Magnolia
the Last Indiana Jones

tolerable
tolerable
only saw parts, but seemed like it was trying too hard
hated it

i mean i don't think it's a masterpiece of cinema or anything (if there is such a thing), but i think it's a lot better than "just a good way to kill two hours."

the first two and last one are what I would consider peer movies... lots of gratuitous action that makes no sense, plot is secondary, complete lack of anything approaching character development, and that is exactly what Sherlock looks like to me from previews
