Isn't there some practice where mothers keep the cord and eat it or something...I swore someone on the radio had a wife who did this. Maybe they were just packing it to preserve the cord blood, can't recall...regardless. +1 for saving it.

+1 for donating it. It's too damn expensive/selfish to save it for yourself. Duke has a program where if you donate cord blood to their program, and your kid ever needs it, they can get donation back to them for free or close to no charge. Or something like that.

Actually, it can be used to treat leukemia in kids, other cancers, and genetic diseases, and as an alternative to bone marrow transplants (which is more mature and is more likely to lead to a rejection and is more painful).[Edited on July 27, 2009 at 2:37 PM. Reason : ]
