Some lady had about 10 items replaced for free tonight after her son ran the grocery cart into the curb and flipped it. Shouldn't she have to pay for that herself for being stupid enough to let her son push the cart?[Edited on July 27, 2009 at 11:59 PM. Reason : .]

These are the dilemmas you face when you're 29, working at a grocery store.

i thought this thread was about tax breaks

it's usually easier to give people what they want so they don't cause a big scene. but yeah, something that was totally preventable like that shouldn't entitle her to free replacement items

At whatever point the manager says sorry you will have to buy the replacement items. If it were a small store with foreign owners they would say "you break you buy."

Ideally, in a capitalistic society, nobody should get anything for free. However, with both rich and poor folks getting misappropriated funds from the government, the idea of any moral issues arising from these situations makes little sense to me.

working for a corporate company makes you give people so much they dont deserve.....ah the restaurant industry is the worst!!"i dont like this".....then you shouldnt have ordered it!!but they get it for free anyway
7/28/2009 12:18:32 AM
She had already left the store and demanded free shit? Bitch
7/28/2009 12:18:38 AM
its just goodwill from the storewhen i was a kid i collected disney statues i would purchase from the mall. one day i bought one and accidently dropped my bag. yes, it was my fault. it was a $7 statue and the store replaced it. they didn't have to, but they did and it made me appreciate a kind gesture.the "point" at which people should stop getting free shit, is entirely up to the person or company giving said free shit

it's all about business. forcing her to pay for the items a second time will pretty much ensure that she will not shop at your store again. replacing the items at no cost ensures repeat business, which will pay for those 10 items many times over in the long run.plus she will tell all of her friends how nice it was that your store replaced the items at no cost, thus bringing more people into the store[Edited on July 28, 2009 at 12:46 PM. it is called the 2 and 10 rule:If you have good service, you typically tell 2 people. If you experience bad service, you tell 10 people, on average. It would be more about preserving a relationship with a customer, rather than leaving them armed with a bad experience.[Edited on July 28, 2009 at 1:48 PM. Reason : the customer is not always right, but they are always the customer]

It definitely makes good business sense to offer--I think part of it is having the personal accountability to know when to refuse. If my kid flipped the grocery cart over and broke items, I would know it's not the store's responsibility to replace the items for me--either man up and pay for them again, or do without, and know that maybe little Johnny isn't old enough or responsible enough to be pushing the cart. The store's gracious offer should be graciously declined in that instance.
