didn't see this anywhere else on there and did a search...

Study: Tanning beds can be as deadly as arsenic
Cancer risk jumps 75 percent if ultraviolet radiation device used before 30

what we already knew for a long time. i hope this actually makes people reconsider.

Quote :
" LONDON - International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer riskcategory, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas.

For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The new classification means tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

The research was published online in the medical journal Lancet Oncology on Wednesday, by experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization.

"People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds," said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. "We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don't think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan."

Most lights used in tanning beds give off mainly ultraviolet radiation, which cause skin and eye cancer, according to the International Agency for Cancer Research.

The classification of tanning beds as carcinogenic was disputed by Kathy Banks, chief executive of The Sunbed Association, a European trade association of tanning bed makers and operators.

"The fact that is continuously ignored is that there is no proven link between the responsible use of sunbeds and skin cancer," Banks said in a statement. She said most users of tanning beds use them less than 20 times a year.

But as use of tanning beds has increased among people under 30, doctors have seen a parallel rise in the numbers of young people with skin cancer. In Britain, melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, is now the leading cancer diagnosed in women in their 20s. Normally, skin cancer rates are highest in people over 75.

Previous studies found younger people who regularly use tanning beds are eight times more likely to get melanoma than people who have never used them. In the past, WHO warned people younger than 18 to stay away from tanning beds.

Cogliano cautioned that ultravoilet radiation is not healthy, whether it comes from a tanning bed or from the sun. The American Cancer Society advises people to try bronzing or self-tanning creams instead of tanning beds."

It won't. And I have no sympathy for them at all. I actually hope they get cancer - and that most of them live, so that they learn a damn lesson or two. And pass it on to their kids.

She's not biased at all!

I guess that's why tanning is a weekly occurrence for so many women, if not more frequently.

That's the kind of stance to take when some report is published saying [some unavoidable aspect of daily modern life] has a relationship to cancer/some other illness.
It's not one to take for melanoma tubes.

When I see a chick who fakes or bakes, she is so much less attractive than if she didn't:
1) Either she bakes, and is a retard at worst, and at best, has some very misplaced priorities. If she doesn't bake, she fakes. See #2
2) Buys into the tan=hot notion

There's a horribly strong family history of skin cancer in my husband's (irish) family. It kills me that some of his cousins actively seek to tan, despite seeing what their mothers look like in terms of moles and other sun-related discolorations.

^I should take some pictures of my stepmother-in-law. Her face isn't too bad b/c she's protected it fairly well, but she's a sunworshipper. Regarding vacationing anywhere but a pool or beach, she said "That's what pictures are for." Her decolletage is truly revolting. It's a mix of wrinkled tissue paper, leather, and spots, spots, spots. She's in great shape for her age, but you can't tell because her skin has lost all elasticity. There is seriously no way to convey how disgusting her skin is.

...I took my husband to the dermatologist today, and he had a huge chunk taken out of his back. You know, the pasty fellow whose back sees the sun 6 times a year, if that, with sunscreen.

Skin cancer isn't something I want to tangle with, and it is the easiest cancer to avoid.

I know relatively little about tanning beds so someone please explain why a tanning bed would be more likely to cause cancer than spending days out in the sun fishing/ swimming/ working etc.

I mean- is there a difference from tanning in the sun and just being active outside without a shirt on?

If not than I'm screwed.

i don't think wearing sunscreen on my face daily is bad!

i have a TON of freckles on my face and i would prefer my face NOT wrinkle prematurely due to sun exposure! it is in my face lotion and makeup so it isn't like it is an extra step or anything.

^^how is there a difference though? i mean one is moving around and one is sitting there like "oh look at me i'm getting brown"

it's still the same amount of UV ray exposure amirite?

Dude, it's dnl.
Those comments don't even dignify reading, much less justification.

Quote :
"it's still the same amount of UV ray exposure amirite?"

No.
It's more, faster, and not the same ratio as from outdoors exposure.

Quote :
"folks ought to do whatever the fuck they want with their skin."

You saw where I said I hope they get cancer As far as why? Because you and I pay for this shit, indirectly.

^^ well if you look at women back then people WANTED to be pale.

hats/umbrellas/etc to prevent sun exposure.

i mean it is fine but i don't think it is a pussy to not want to look wrinkly and old and/or get skin cancer. especially with my skin type - fair and freckly/moley

all cancers cost 93 billion a year. obesity is 147 billion per year. out of all those cancers, lets say skin is like 1/3 of that? so about 30 billion a year, versus almost 150 billion a year for obesity. just saying. and that 1/3 number is probably waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay higher than what the skin cancer number actually is.
