my neck has been stiff and achy for like 3 weeks. getting to the point where i wanna get somebody to fix me. should i see a chiropractor or just get a professional massage? i've never been to a chiropractor before but i imagine i wouldn't get an appt right away and i'd have to deal with insurance BS and i could probably go get a massage today for like $30. what is the proper course of action tdub?

My previous insurance paid for massage as well. Most chiropractors are nothing more than half baked physical therapists that know how to pop joints.

what caused the problem? If you were playing baseball and pulled something I'd say the chiropractor. Or if you've had a change in sleeping patterns or something I'd say massage.

50/50 shot one will recommend the other.

none of those options actually have the ability to fix the underlying problem, whatever it may be

I got it in a really weird way. I had a bad 24 hour flu and the next morning I woke up with the soreness and it's persisted ever since

insurance covers chiropractor so i got an appt today. i'm not quite sure what to expect. i have very simple muscle stiffness, and all these chiropractors talk about spinal adjustments and spinal decompression, i am a little worried they are gonna go overboard and do crazy stuff to me

I'm simply not a fan. I knew I hurt my back working on my wifes car. I went about 2 weeks taking it easy on it and taking NSAIDs and it didn't get better. I called an ortho doc and had a 2 week wait, so I figured I'd try the chiro in the meantime if he could get me in. I called at about 10:30am that day and had an appointment for the afternoon, that should have been a red flag.

I go in there, I'm sitting, tell him I hurt it trying to change my wifes tire. He says stand up and bend over. I stand and bend over and he says "yeah, you need an adjustment, come over here". He puts me on the machine that moves your legs up and down to presumably warm my back up. He does this for about 30-45 seconds, pushing on my low back a little bit. Then has me lay on the bench on my side and cracks my back by pressing on my pelvis through my glute. He says to set up another appointment to come back in in a week and he'll do it the other way and I'll be aligned and good to go. I was in his building for less than 10 minutes and he hit up my insurance company for $140.

The next day, my back was actually sorer than it had been since I hurt it.

Eventually, a year later I finally got an MRI and it revealed I had a slightly bulging disc. Cracking a back doesn't do shit for that, not long term anyway.

These guys are just quacks. He also does active release therapy massage (ART) which seemed to really do good stuff on some super tight muscles I had from overtraining. However, out of the 5 treatments I did of that for knee tendinitis, 3 times he charged my insurance company like $40 for something related to checking my back. And we wonder why our health car costs are out of control.

Apparently they don't do the snap, crackle, pop routine anymore btw. The newest techniques have abandoned that approach....

i say no to the chiropractor.

basically they just scam you for money. the first visit is the xray and consultation.

then the next visit they do some work for you and say that you have to come back 13 more times in a short amount of time to get your back's muscles adjusted to the new form.

ken,

if you want a good massage therapist i can give you their info.

^ Yeah, I don't get their new techniques at all. As if the old ones didn't seem ridiculous enough.

Apparently now the visits last like 5 minutes and cost like $100.....

That is one profession I think I need to get involved in cause being a janitor like Arab13 just isn't cutting it anymore.

interested to see how this worked out for you

gf bought me a 1-hour massage for valentine's day and we finally went together about a month ago...the woman who owns the salon is someone we do tango with, so she might have hooked us up with a good deal (i don't know, since i didn't pay for it)

in any case...i felt AMAZING afterward...the feeling of limberness and relaxation followed through for a few days

about 2 years ago i had some back stiffness and went to see a massage person and it didn't work at all. i really have little confidence in chiropractors to start with, but amna wants me to go and it's gotten to the point where i can't get work done that i'm willing to try it. the reviews online of the place i'm going to are all stellar, so we'll see. i really do hope this doesn't turn into a come back every week for 3 months and then you'll be ok.

DO

NOT

CHIRO

those dudes are quacks and are just as likely to fuck your neck up as to fix it.

start with massage, if it's muscle problems thats all youll need.

if you've got spine problems then you damn sure need to get to an orthopedic MD, not some damn voodoo medicine man.

cause it was an optional x-ray if my pain didnt go away on it own - he thought I had a muscle strain that led to sciatic nerve pain

well it hasnt gone away, so I probably need to go. I've just been dealing with the pain

I went to the chiropractor about a year ago from massive neck pain that I've had since senior year of high school from an injury...

All he did was the snap crackle pop thing and it ended up making it worse in the long run.

biofreeze is pretty good stuff. i wouldn't worry about the 4 times a day thing.*
