I need to rent a car for a trip. But I don't want to rent a cheap piece or a big american sedan. Anyone know of a place to rent a convertible or sports car like a 350z, a hertz that actually has one of those specialty mustangs, or I guess a Sebring convertible would work. Any ideas?

Most of the rental places have a "sports car" type of rental. Usually it's a Mustang or something similar.

Did you even check the Hertz or Enterprise websites???

A Chrysler Sebring convertible is an old-person's convertible, just to let you know.

I could have sworn there was a place local that had a 350z convertible. Can't find it on any of the websites...

You cannot rent a sports car, at least not anywhere around here.

A friend of my rented a Lamborghini Gallardo once, but he lives in Vegas.

It's not really a sports car, but the only thing close to it that you could rent (without living in Vegas or somewhere like that) is one of the Shelby Mustangs from Hertz. From what I hear, it's a huge pain in the ass, too...it's not like just renting a little econobox or minivan.

[Edited on August 14, 2009 at 1:28 PM. Reason : and even the Shelby Mustangs are automatics.]

^^^ Yep, there are a few places that rent real sports cars but they are only in tourist-type places and the cost is insane, probably due to their insurance costs.

A rental company has no reason to give you a vehicle with a manual transmission and they have no reason to offer you something with lots of power or rear wheel drive really. To do any of those things is to invite problems in the US, since you do not actually have to know how to drive in any way, shape or form to get a license here. In europe, having a manual transmission in a rental is completely normal, but you'll never find that shit here because it seriously wouldn't last a single fucking day.

I dunno, but they advertise it like hell in Car and Driver and Road & Track.

Production of the ZHZ Convertible will be limited making it an instant classic. It’s another one of the many exciting cars that you can reserve from the Hertz Fun Collection®. And like all Fun Collection vehicles it comes equipped with SIRIUS XM Radio. Now is your chance to get in the driver's seat of sports car history.

• LS3 6.2L V8 aluminum-block engine with dual-mode performance exhaust and 436 horsepower
• Magnetic Selective Ride Control - Tour or Sport Mode
• Goodyear Eagle F1 EMT Supercar tires
• Larger brakes with cross-drilled brake rotors
• EPA estimated 25 MPG highway
• The Coupe models are the most aerodynamic Corvettes ever

The Corvette ZHZ are available for reservations at select major market locations in the U.S."

Still might not be available around here though.

the original rent-a-racer

guys used to rent them, take em home and swap the v6 in their coupe with the 289 Hi-Po in the GT350H. the folks at hertz would never realize the difference until they were long gone.

^^^ If they'll rent you a 6 speed manual, that is fucking hot. That one seems to be an automatic, but I guess they've moved away from the 4 speed (I don't keep up with automatics, hah ). The new Tremec gearbox in the 2008's and up is supposed to be a huge improvement in feel over the T-56. Not only that, but the fucking LS3 son!!!

God dammit I need an 08 C6.

Looks like they don't have them in NC...and it's still an automatic.

I was thinking about renting one to do a track day, but I don't play well with torque converters.

Yep, my rental cars in Europe have mostly been manuals...even the turbodiesel euro-vans.

The only thing I can think of we rented over there that was an automatic was an E-class Mercedes.

Also, I have never been anywhere in Europe where it isn't totally normal to drive in a manner that would land you in jain here in the States.

^^^ The shifting isn't the part I really, really hate about an auto. It's the stupid torque converter (although I don't really like it picking its own gears, either).

Isn't it amazing to go somewhere and actually see like 10 cars in a row properly navigate a roundabout?

Yeah, that went on for a while, then they started getting wise to it.

[Edited on August 14, 2009 at 1:43 PM. Reason : ^ or stay out of the motherfucking passing lane unless they're, you know, passing?]

Yep, I love driving there. People actually maintain speed through turns and stuff, that's why the roundabout comes up in my mind so often. When you put one of those around here it causes fucking mayhem though. Particularly with the fucking grey hairs son, whenever I see that fucking grey perm sticking out around the headrest in front of me I know I'm fucked.

Old people are all but guaranteed to be terrible. The odds are merely overwhelmingly bad for everyone else.

and yeah, good call about not slowing down every time the road turns.
