College Grad Can't Find Job, Wants $$$ Back

Updated 10:59 AM EDT, Sun, Aug 2, 2009

She went to college to boost her chances of finding a great job once she got out of school, but now that that hasn't happened, Trina Thompson wants her money back.

Thompson, a graduate of Monroe College, is suing her school for the $70,000 she spent on tuition because she hasn't found solid employment since receiving her bachelor's degree in April, according to a published report.

The business-oriented school in the Bronx didn't do enough to help her find a job, Thompson alleges, so she wants a refund. The college says it does plenty for grads.

The 27-year-old information-technology student accuses the school's Office of Career Advancement for not living up to its end of the deal and offering her the leads and employment advice it promised, according to The New York Post.

"They have not tried hard enough to help me," the beleaguered Bronx resident wrote in her lawsuit, filed July 24 in Bronx Supreme Court.

Thompson's mother is proud of her daughter for completing her college education, but acknowledges Trina is upset that all her high hopes haven't panned out.

The mother and daughter live together, but Trina's mother, Carol, is a substitute teacher and the only one of the two who makes any money. They're barely scraping enough together to get by, reports the Post.

On top of her unemployment woes, Trina now faces mounting debt from student loans.

"This is not the way we want to live our life," her mom told the paper. "This is not what we planned."

Monroe defends its career-advice programs and is adamant that its staff assists young professionals in their careers.

"The lawsuit is completely without merit," school spokesman Gary Axelbank told the Post. "The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration."

On the school's Web site, the career program boasts that it provides free services for graduates at any point in their lives.

ACTUALLY SIRS

this monroe college is a for profit institution. as such, it is a guarantee that she got duped into going there, and this is a surprisingly acceptable lawsuit, at least to me.

now, she should have realized this beforehand, but that is no basis to not sue in this country of ours.

obama will fix it!

but colleges do have some obligation to at least attempt to hold up their end of the bargain what with promising to help graduates find positions and all

if they did in fact promise that

Maybe she'll sue the attorney for the case they're about to lose.

She's got it all wrong. You don't sue the school for your inability to get a job.

You just sue the companies you applied to that aren't taking you.

this is a typical, accredited college. looking at their website, they in no way "guarantee" or even imply that a student is going be awarded a job upon completion.

their "office of career advancement" is just like NCSU's Career Center. or any other university. they help students prepare their resumes and interview strategies.

I hope this chick gets hammered with a nice fat bill for legal fees when this case gets summarily tossed out of court.

For this to have any merit the college would have to have an above average number of unemployed graduates.

this is a fine line a lot of private, for profit colleges walk with career services/placement/etc.

i work for a private college and while we dont "guarantee" you a job, it does sound to potential students like most of our students graduate with jobs.

^ sorry, my bad. you're right: most private colleges and universities are not-for-profit.

i googled a list of "for profit colleges" some of them are kind of sketchy. If this was against the University of Phoenix, I wonder if people would feel any different... it seems so ghetto.

I guess I dont really know much about Monroe College... anyone live in NY know much about it?

well, generally private obviously means that they dont get gov't money

but many smaller private colleges like the one in the article are geared to turn a profit. not to say that all of them have turned a profit

for private colleges such as that one, career services is a major selling point. In many cases under the assumption that if you go to X school, you can have a rewarding career in your field

[Edited on August 2, 2009 at 10:21 PM. Reason : and monroe looks like one of those type of schools]

i just looked through their website and read a couple articles about them... they (Monroe) seemed pretty straight up.

they don't sound like they're making any sort of outrageous promises, and they're nationally accredited by the same org that accredits all the the major universities in that area.

I'm looking at their career advancement webpages, and they are making it very clear that students have total responsibility to find and get jobs, that they've got to dress right, show up on time, research the companies, have their resumes proofread, talk intelligently, etc. etc.

i don't read anything that seems to imply they are allowing their students to believe they've got a guaranteed job.

but i also don't have any firsthand experience with them, and i haven't seen any of their advertisement campaigns.

i've thought about this for a long time too, i'd lose the case thought since it's nc state and i'm a slacker . but these places are selling the dream of a great career and it gets even worse at times like this. the best way to describe these places is
pyramid scheme
A pyramid scheme is a non-sustainable business model that involves the exchange of money primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme, often without any product or service being delivered.

its far from a pyramid scheme

again, i work at one of these private colleges. they really do help people success in non-traditional careers. its just that she was probably sold on the idea of going to that school under the idea that she will more than likely have a job when she graduates.

the job placement rate at my school is near 80% but I could def see issues arise at other schools

"pyramid scheme"

Monroe College is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. that's the same authority that accredits Columbia, Princeton, Rutgers, Penn, etc.

sorry, but it's kind of hard to believe they would accredit a scam pyramid scheme that rips off po' folks.

granted, i would never send MY kid there... but not everyone who lives in the Bronx can get accepted into Columbia or SUNY. so it fills its place. at least it's not some bogus online diploma mill. they actually have a 60% acceptance ratio of total applicants.

looking at their career services, they actually place a lot of graduates within the New York City goverment.

i think we all intuitively understand, that if this chick can't get a job, it's her own damn fault not the fault of the college.

i'll bet she slacked her way to graduation, didnt bother pursuing any internships, didnt make use of the job search resources, showed up to interviews late and/or wearing street clothes and chomping on chewing gum and using poor grammar. economy is tough and she cant get a job. big surprise. i'll also bet her classmates who play the game right, are getting jobs.

I graduated from college and cannot find a job!

The reason I cannot find a job has nothing to do with my shitty personality, consistent failures during interviews, and having a strong dislike for people in general. Nope, it's the schools fault, I'm taking them to court!

Oh, and no, the fact that I'm suing the college that I graduated from is in no way a reflection upon the type of person that I am. It's the external world's fault, not mine. Corporate America will not bend to my will and it's all Monroe's fault.

This lawsuit should not go forward. It should not have even been filed.

I do think, however, that there is much left to be desired in today's higher education machine. We are bombarded with messages from institutions of higher learning, politicians, the media, and other areas of society that the only way to succeed is through "education"--but what does this mean?

Are we truly educating college students? Who decides what a sound education--regardless of discipline--even is? Who determines the method for achieving the goals? Who measures whether or not the goals have been achieved?

If any "contract" has been broken in the case at issue and many like it, it is the social contract concerning higher education in our society. It had been understood for decades that a student would "sacrifice" (the idea is that it would be easier not to go to college) by pursuing higher education; the fully accredited institution of higher learning would confer a degree upon the student--thus confirming that he or she had achieved something meaningful and had all the "rights, privileges, and honors pertaining thereunto"; and employing the new graduate would be gainful and beneficial for society--and eventually for the individual, as well.

But this is one problem with social contracts--they're not written down. Society simply changed the rules and the Monroe grad in question apparently didn't get the addendum.
