I agree with that, sometimes on longer trips I like to set a speed where I shouldn't have to pass anyone on the cruise control and just stay in the right lane, but it never lasts long cause some fool always gets up on my bumper.

then i get over just as soon as they have gone to the trouble of passing me on the right

Duke is right. You are the classic problem. Absolute speed is irrelevant. And you're wrong about not being able to get over if they can't pass on the right. To pass on the right, you have to wait until a gap opens, move into the gap going much faster than the right lane is moving and hope to be able to get back over in time -- running up real close to the next car in the right lane and having to cut you off to get back over. This is mother fucking dangerous BUT WE WILL DO IT EVEN IF IT KILLS US BOTH. All you have to do is get over into the gap, maybe slow down for a second to let me and perhaps others you've been blocking to pass, then you can get back over, AND GUESS WHAT MOTHER-FUCKER? THEN YOU WON'T HAVE TO HAVE US ON YOUR FUCKING ASS!

If you at any point aren't passing someone, I give it a few seconds, then slowly start getting continually closer and more aggressive. I don't go immediately into full-tilt asshole mode if someone goes 1 second without making progress towards overtaking other traffic.

Tailgating when they can't get over is completely wrong -- they're not gonna speed up for you and they shouldn't have to. But after a few seconds of them clearly being able to get over... IT'S ON.

^^^^ if that's the speed you want to be going, then wouldn't you be passing the people in the right lane and therefore have no need to get over to begin with?


To add one more thing: If you WERE passing cars and now the right lane is clear, you should get back over to the right, regardless of if you are going just as fast as you were 2 minutes ago.

In short, stay out of the left lane to the max extent possible. Move left to pass, and when you're done, get back over to the right. (*** max extent possible will vary between drivers--I spend a lot more of my time passing people than most drivers do--I therefore rate more time spent in the left lane).
